Sewing Machine Recommendation

Anyone have any recommendations for a sewing machine that won't break the bank and is good for a novice sewer? I really want to get a machine but there are so many choices I get overwhelmed. I'd appreciate any help on what things to look for or certain machines, etc. Thanks!

Re: Sewing Machine Recommendation

  • I have a fancy schmancy Viking which I absolutely love.  Obviously as a novice you don't really need anything fancy, but I would definitely recommend looking at the lower end Vikings.  I have no idea what they cost though.  They hold up forever.  My mom has one she bought in the 60's that still works.  I would also recommend Janome.

What all are you planning to use your machine for?  IMO Singer and Brother are crap, but if you're just planning to do very simple stuff, they might be an inexpensive option that would work for you.

If you want something that will last a long time look for metal parts, not plastic.

Definitely look on Amazon (they have good deals on Janome) and Ebay.  You void your warranty by buying on Ebay from someone that isn't an authorized dealer, but if you're buying a brand that will last a long time, that's not much of an issue.  Also check out any sewing shops near you to see if they're selling any floor samples or machines that were used for teaching classes.

  • Thanks - that helps a lot.

I plan on starting out simple...pillows and tote bags and such. I would eventually like to make clothes for my kids when the time comes. My mom used to make all of my dresses and halloween costumes and that's still something that is really special to me.

I think I want a simple machine but I want it to last for a long time. I can always trade it in if I need a fancier model down the road.

Very true and a lot of dealers offer trade in programs.  Many of them also offer free classes to help you learn to use your machine.
