Yes...I know that physical fitness is important...and yes...6 a.m. and before is not a typically traffic-heavy time of day. However, why are you jogging down the middle of my street when there are two perfectly good sidewalks on either side of the road? And you see me pull out of my driveway, you know I'm coming...why do you proceed to jog down the middle of my street with cars parked on both sides when you could have easily moved to the sidewalk? And you...the pair jogging down Douglas this morning, at 6 a.m., in dense fog...what the hell were you thinking?!
So many people in this city really do lack common sense! (nevermind the fact that I felt the need to get to work at 6 a.m., driving through the dense fog, to get my workout on)
Re: Open letter to early morning joggers
SBJ!
I for one would NOT risk my life for a morning jog.
The problem with the bicyclists is that Toledo is not bike-friendly, which causes issues for both vehicles and bicycles; no one knows what to do (hence some riders that are aholes). Bikes are allowed on the road, and drivers aren't looking for bikes on the sidewalk. Pedestrians don't want bikes on the sidewalk either (I've done both!). Most accidents happen at intersections, not from behind.
Reflective gear is definitely smart!!
Personally, however, I cannot fathom how running in the middle of the road is logical... at all. IMO, if you need to run on a nice level surface use the sidewalk, a trail or a treadmill.
Bicycling, OTOH, I completely understand. They do belong on the road and have the same right to be there as the cars do. Of course it's smart and nice to be a courteous rider, but yeah... they belong there. It does suck that much of Toledo is so non-bike-friendly though. I stick to side streets as much as possible when I ride b/c it's too damn scary otherwise!!
sidewalks are almost worse that the road for you. Think of how uneven the sidewalk slaps are - your joints are constantly trying to adjust.
I, do not run in the dark. That's my choice. I wish I wasn't afraid to, but I am. That said, I don't run strictly down the middle of the road, but I will be in the middle of one of the lanes.
Typically, I run at the park on the soft trails.
There are so few cars on the road in my neighborhood at that time, so what does it matter? I think you're more annoyed at the people who run on main roads versus those who are on side streets. I was just giving reasons why people would run on the road versus sidewalks.
