Trader Joes

So we finally have one in Portland and now I need to hear what's awesome there.  I have training from 12:30-4 near it so I'm planning on hitting it up after.  What should I be on the lookout for?

Re: Trader Joes

  • I heard rumor that they aren't doing it anymore, but the wine! We also used to love the french toast sticks that are in the bag. And the rice bowls. And the chocolate chip cookies. And the juice.

Oy vey, I miss trader joes. I want one.

  • There is a fb page that always has the new items for TJ's and great recipes, I will send it to you if you want to "like" it and check it out.

I love shopping there for fruits and veggies, a lot of them are organic and are a lot cheaper than whole foods or my grocery store.

Right now they have a pumpkin pancake/waffle mix which is really good (if you are a pumpkin fan) You must get the smashing smores (to die for, put them in the microwave for a few seconds) I also get their chicken salad when I go, to give my lunch a little variety. And their wine isn't too bad, I keep a couple bottles around, I mean for $2.75 you can't beat it! Overall, I have never found anything I didn't like or wasn't top quality!

  • My FIL parked around the corner last week because parking is still impossible. Their nuts and frozen veggies & fruits are great prices. I think Portland has a wine section so hit that up! I love their basmati rice medley. Their version of the No Pudge Brownies are better than the brand No Pudge.

I buy their frozen rice & bean burritos-- they are low fat & quick if I need a fast meal.

  • I went last night after work and it wasn't too bad, I could find a parking spot easily last night.

I got a couple bottles of the cheap wine, trail mix, crackers, chips and salsa, some dark chocolate mints (that were amazing), the harvest blend grains on Claire's recommendation, I got peanut butter filled preztels (they were good too).  It was pretty crowded and my brother was getting impatient so I couldn't find a couple things I was looking for.  Also I got an spiced apple bread mix, that was really good.

*Last night they had a man just restocking the 2 buck chuck wine because it was flying off the shelves.

I can't wait to go back but I have a feeling it's always going to be a little crazy over there, like it is at Whole foods, I'm thinking about going back over this weekend alone so I can go at my own pace and without my brother.

  • Lot's of goodies there!  I love the black bean salsa and the 2-buck chuck (wine that's actually slightly more than $2).

We usually only stop for specific items at ours because its a 20 minute hike from our house.  Everything we've tried has been very good.

  • I haven't been in a while (its kind of out of my way), but if you're looking for a fast dinner, they have some nice pre-marinated meats.
  • They have some great salad dressings- parmesan ranch, cilantro, pear champagne vinaigrette.

    Natural peanut butter, jelly.

    Cereal bars.

Light Coconut milk + Curry sauce = great dinner (plus other thinns)

    General Tso sauce

    A great selection of cheese.

    Some great wine/beer.

Frozen boods like sweet potato fries/pie crusts.

    There is a ton.

  • I've just recently started shopping there and am not 100% on the bandwagon, but getting close.  I buy their organic produce and meats to make baby food for Mariela.  She seems to really love what I make her (without any added seasonings or spices yet!) and I've tasted some of the fruits and veggie and they are delicious.  I did buy some free range meats (chicken, turkey, beef) which I cooked an pureed for M, but she hasn't eaten them yet.  The meat was more expensive than what I'm used to, but from what I hear it is a good price for free range, grain fed meats vs what you find elsewhere.

Wednesday I bought some brown Jasmine rice and Quinoa to try out, so we shall see how they are.

  • My favorite thing from there is seriously their frozen Orange chicken Smile I also used to be a huge fan of their stuffed fish, they come in single serving sizes. Which I loved when I was single. They have really pretty good cheap wine.

I also love their refried black beans with jalapenos! That is what got me to start eating black beans, before that I was anti any bean.
