Anyone have FIOS?

I am so far beyond fed up with Comcast I can't even find words to describe my hatred for them.  Does anyone have FIOS?  Do you like/dislike it?  Why?  Do you have to have a box for HD, or can you just plug into the TV?

Re: Anyone have FIOS?

  • My mom has FIOS.  It's my biggest regret to moving out of her house and in with DH.  I loved it.  The internet was super fast.  My only problem was with the OnDemand.  They don't have as many free options as Comcast, which is kind of a bummer but I didn't really use it that often anyway.

You don't have to get an HD box, but I'm pretty sure you do need a box.  I think the most basic box is $15/month (plus the package of channels you buy)?  As far as I know, they don't have the little converter type box Comcast has.

  • We have FIOS, and we like it. It took some time to get used to at first because we were so used to Comcast. The menu and DVR is a little different. One really cool thing is you can rewind live TV...say you are going back and forth watching two different channels. Say you miss a part of the show on one channel - just rewind and you can watch it! That was really cool when we figured that out!!

We have boxes for every TV. We have 2 HD boxes which look like large cable boxes and the rest of the TV's have smaller boxes attached to them.

Overall I like the service. Tom thinks it's faster and clearer but for me, as long as it's up and running I'm happy. So far we haven't had an outages and we've had it for about a year now. I hope that helps.

  • We have FIOS and really like it.  We've had it for just over 2 years and wouldn't switch to anything else.  Contrary to what I've read about online, I think the customer service is great.  Anytime we've had to call them about something they've been very helpful and patient!

We have 2 HD/DVR cable boxes through them and we rent them for $15/each a month.  There is a basic box you can get, but I dont know what that amount is.  I do know that you have to have a cable box, it can't just hook up straight to your TV like cable used to be.

  • We got FOIS. J was totally on board when he found out our apartment complex could get it since he had it at home - I came from a Comcast house and so far, I like it. We have not had any issues, the internet is super quick and I love the DVR - you can even access your DVR'd shows through the internet or an app on your iPhone/Android.

The remote has a lot going on and it's difficult to get use to naviagating through the menus on the tv, but I'm sure I'd be a whiz at it too if I watched TV as often at J does ;)

  • Awesome.  Thanks for the feedback!  I think we're about ready to take the plunge and make the switch.  I just can.not.stand. Comcast.  I was trying to avoid having to have a box for the TV in the bedroom if possible since we use the dresser instead of a TV stand, but it sounds like maybe I'll have to.  If that's the worst of FIOS' problems, though, that's not too bad.

We eventually switched to Comcast because we were tried of Verizon trying to @ss rape us every month.  They kept sending out bill to the wrong address after 2 years - long story involving a computer glitch.

Anyway, your service will be better, but get ready to get some money stolen.

Stolen as in like they charge way too much for their service?  Or stolen as in like they suck and will double bill me every month?  The charging too much I think is just unavoidable anymore, as much as I hate it.

FWIW, I feel like Comcast has to be way more of an @ss raper than Verizon b/c they charge just as much for total schit service.  Most of the time, I can't even look at blogs or anything with photos on them at home b/c it trips my internet and I have to reset it several times for the photos to even load.  Then I get angry and want to throw my beloved Macbook and kick my poor little kitties.

  • In our bedroom we have our TV on a dresser.  The cable box wouldn't fit so what I did was put one our our tiny single shelving units next to the dresser and thats what the cable box sits on.

I had Cox when several years ago when I lived alone and Fios now only costs about $50 more than what I was paying then and the service/products are much better!  So, IMHO, I don't think Verizon is outrageous.

  • Verizon sent our monthly bill to the wrong address EVERY month for two years.

Every month they would cut our service, we would call explaining we could pay online because 1. Never got an account number, 2. when we finally did, the stupid thing never worked.

We would pay over the phone, they would 'discover' the incorrect address, enter the correct address and then the following month we would repeat.  No bill, no service, rinse repeat.

I eventually called the CEO's office to get it taken care of after I lost service for so long I almost missed a client deadline.   We found out that our street name had too many characters and so the system never recorded our new address.

YAY! problem solved right?  well no, they refused to tell us how much we had accrued in late fees/reconnection fees over the last two years.  They also couldn't tell us whether we had actually been getting which channels we had been pay for etc etc.  They were willing to credit us a couple hundred bucks, but wouldn't even let us know how much they over charged us.

    I DETEST VERIZON.

At my last place, I ordered FIOS but changed my mind later that day and cancelled the order.  They never even came out.  Two years after that a $42 collections notice popped up on my credit - Verizon charged me for a month, didn't send a bill for that either and then set me to collections.

There's a reason they were voted America's most hated company.

That's why I put up with comcast's shittty service.

  • Aw, dude, that does totally blow.  I had a very similar situation with Comcast, though, which is why I loathe them.

They sent 7 technicians on 7 different occasions out to my house, none of which could figure out how to hook up my cable/internet correctly, told me they needed to come install a new line to my apartment and never showed up after I left work to be there, told me they needed to "boost the signal from the sub-station up the street" for my service to work, etc.  This went on for FOUR effing months before someone finally realized, "Ohhhhh the person who lived here before you had RCN cable.  All we need to do is flip a switch to change it over."

Comcast proceeded to charge me for 4 months of cable/internet that they didn't provide me, then refused to credit my account when I called citing every single date they'd been at my house and the outcome of each trip.  They sent me to collections for $492 that I never even owed them.  In the end, I threw a fit in their corporate office until I got the charges removed, but it's still on my credit report.  That's the only frickin' blemish on my credit report, too.  Fvckers.

  • You should be able to get it off your credit report now.  I forget how to do it, but we've done it before.  You can send a request to the credit reporting agencies asking them to verify the collection.  Sounds like in your case they won't be able to, so they will remove it.
