Stinky Shoes...How to get rid of that smell

Last week our basement filled up with water twice... And the tennis shoes I wore to clean up the mess,  smell horrible.

I left them out to dry and have washed them once.. But they still smell so bad I had to leave them out side.

Any suggestions? I really don't want to throw them away, they are pretty new and in good shape.. But that smell EKK.. Sorry for grossing everyone out.

  • Thanks! I will try washing them and sun drying them.

I have cute zebra rain boots, but half my stuff is still at my mom since we aren't move in yet.. I think I am going to make sure they go next round.

  • You can make up some baking soda and scrub them down, I pour BS in my shoes when I don't wear socks w/ them, typically my work shoes.

We had this happen to our basement too! So I feel ya!

  • Is there a way to take the foot lining out of the shoe? There may be funk underneath it that is making  it smell.

  • When I'm trying to salvage my H's stinky shoes, I'll soak them in the washing machine for an hour or two with detergent, water and vinegar. I'll also add a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle.

If it's an especially resistant smell, sometimes I have to pour vinegar straight into the shoe after washing, making sure to get under the insole and in all the nooks and crannys.
