holiday tradtions

all this holiday talk got me thinking...what are your holiday traditions or what were they when you were little?  Any you want to start?

Re: holiday tradtions

  • I loved driving around looking at Christmas lights with my parents! We also always spend Christmas Eve at my parents cabin. We'd go to Christmas eve service at church, look at lights, then go back to the cabin. It was always the women of the family that went to church and the men just managed to stay home. And when we got back from church, sometimes "Santa" had already come. So we had to turn our heads and go upstairs. And waking up the next morning, you could go downstairs.. but you couldn't open your stocking until everyone was awake. We still do this.

    I just love it.

Now that i own my own house.. I just love decorating for Christmas. It just warms my heart. Smile

  • For Christmas, DH and I open gifts on Christmas Eve and have snack foods (mini quiche, cheese and crackers, wine). We like to go to midnight mass with the family (if we can stay up) - otherwise we go to morning mass.

Growing up, we did stockings first. There's always an orange and some candy in it. We pretty much spend the day in pjs.

  • My dad has a large family. On Christmas Eve we always do a progressive dinner with his side and stop at all the aunts and uncles houses. We eat appetizers at the first house, salads at the next, dinner at the next, etc. Then we end up at my grandma's house for dessert and opening presents.

DH only has his immediate family that lives here. On Christmas they always make a bunch of junk food (nachos, pigs in a blanket, cake....) instead of the traditional Christmas food. I thought it was weird at first but now I kind of like it.

Oh, and we ALWAYS go shopping on black Friday and start planning our attack the evening of Thanksgiving. I'm pretty sure we're not the only ones who do that though Wink

  • I loved when I was little we would go look at Christmas lights and then go to the only resturant in my small town and have the best hot coca ever. It was the really creamy coca with cool whip on top and shaved chocolate. Yum!

Now, we watch It's a Wonderful Life every Christmas Eve and drink wassel (sp?).

I can't wait this year to let M put cookies out for Santa and also a carrot out for Rudolf. I used to do this when I was younger because I thought if Santa could get something to eat then so could the reindeers.

  • Ami - I love wassail! Yum!

We open presents at midnight - that started after my dad became a drill sergeant. There were many Christmases that he was gone when we'd open presents in the morning, so we started opening them at midnight. My sister and I would hide out in one of our rooms starting at 10pm, play games and Christmas music, then come out at midnight.

We'll probably go back to opening our presents the morning of Christmas because of JJ, but this year...I think we'll open them at midnight again so that my dad can join us via Skype [and I think H will, too].

We really don't have a ton of Christmas traditions because it's never a given that all of us will be together for the holiday. I hope to establish more as things settle down.

  • We have always opened one gift on Christmas Eve and it was always pajamas.  My mom still gets us all pajamas for Christmas Eve and it is fun.

We used to go spend Christmas Eve at my parents house but last year it was too much with M being so little, so we stayed here and did Christmas just the 4 of us and my parents came over around noon.  I liked that a lot and want to do that again.

We usually go to a movie on Christmas night, or everyone but me and sometimes my mom does so we can stay with the littles

We celebrate Chanukkah and Christmas so it is always fun to light to candles and whatnot and give the kids their little Chanukkah gelt

  • Everything about Christmas is a tradition with my family.  Seriously.  I mean we still have a Santa present waiting for us on Christmas morning for Christ's sake! We always go look at Christmas lights and watch The Christmas Story on Christmas Eve.  My mom gets all of us a new ornament every year, and H and I do the same for each other and the dogs too. H and I go eat chinese food every Christmas Eve too.  That's probably my favorite tradition.

  • Growing up, we always drove around and looked at the lights but that tradition faded away as we got older.  I still love lights though!

We always go to DH's grandma's on Christmas Eve.  We have dinner, but not the typical stuff--something like taco salads or spaghetti, and we open gifts.  Then all the grandkids meet up at one of our houses and drink and play games, shame on us Stick out tongue.

Christmas day we go to church, then to my mom's and back to DH's grandmas.  We do gifts with my family and have the traditional Christmas meals at both places.

I'd like for DH and I to start some traditions of our own, but I'm not very creative.  The only one I think we really have now is that we usually open our gifts from each other Christmas morning.  I would love for us to have some traditions that are special to our kid(s) as they grow up...I need to read through these responses for ideas lol.
  • When my brother and I were really little, we would always make a fort in one of our bedrooms on Christmas eve and sleep in there and wait for Santa. And of course we woke up waaaaay freaking early!

We always would listen to the Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas record that my dad had for us when we put up the tree. He also had a Little Drummer Boy record too.. We listened to it all the way up until I got married and moved out! My mom got me the Chipmunks cd so I'd have a copy when I put up my tree :) I can't wait to do that when we have kids.

I really look forward to looking at Christmas lights, going to Midnight Mass, baking all kinds of goodies, and just spending time with the family :)
