Deer Widows ?

does your husband hunt ?

how long does he go for ?

what the biggest he brought home ?

what do you do why he is away ?

Re: Deer Widows ?

  • Yep.  I'm a hunting widow.

H bow hunts, and around here bow season is Sep 15 - Jan 31, so every single Saturday from about 4am - 7pm he's out in the woods.  In our county we have such a deer population problem that you can take unlimited does, so that's usually what he brings home.  He got a little 6pt buck last year, though.

Usually while he's gone I do all the girly stuff he doesn't like to do - shopping, mani/pedi, watching girly shows, clean, read, etc.

Nice.  H keeps begging me to come out and hunt with him.  I just can't do it.  I don't mind him bringing home the bacon (er...venison) but I don't want any part of the killing it.  He keeps trying to entice me with, "But I'll buy your own Real Tree clothes and a comfy tree stand."  Ohhh, well now that you put it that way, sure...b/c I've always wanted my own Real Tree clothes. Stick out tongue

  • I've been itching to hunt for a long time, but I thought it would be wasteful unless we had a chest freezer and to be honest, I didn't have anyone to go with. Our friend's brother started hunting this year and I'll probably go out with him a few times (but not actually shoot anything) and we'll go together next year.

  • My family (dad, brother, uncles) are really big hunters, my H is more of a fishing kind of guy but my dad is taking him out to their dove/deer lease for the first time this year. He's so excited its funny. We went to academy to buy some camo and I had to tell him exactly what to get because he had no idea what kind of clothes to buy.

I refuse to hunt because I can't see an animal die. I know that sounds so hippy of me eventhough I eat meat and live in Texas.

  • We eat venison that my BIL gets, but neither of us is into hunting.  We fish, but we rarely even keep fish.  I'm not anti-hunting, but the thought of doing it myself icks me out.

  • Our BIL and his cousin hunt on our land pretty regularly throughout bow and gun season. My husband will go out a few times now that he has a bow (though it is bright blue so I am working on making a camo cover to go over it) and he usually goes out with the others on opening day.

my hubs hasn't shot one since we have been together, but we get some of the meat from the other guys and I think hubby will be more gung ho about it when we have a chest freezer to store it in, we just don't have the room for it currently. Hubs also isn't too fond of how early and how cold it usually is, so he leaves it to the other guys most of the time.

BIL got a ten point last year I think. And they both have gotten little 6ish points this year already with bows.

  • Hubby is a HUUUUUUUUGE hunter.  He bow and gun hunts deer. But also hunts geese/ducks which starts before deer season.  Basically I lose my husband starting in October.  :-(

he's gotten a doe before (usually a couple a year) but hasn't ever gotten a buck.

While he's gone, I usually chill at home.  we live in the country, so sometimes when he's out hunting (with the truck) there isn't a way for me to get out of the driveway with my car. (If there is snow) So I just hang at home and watch movies, clean, bake, quilt.  Try to get together with girlfriends when I can.

  • mine goes a few weekends for bow then 2 weeks when rifle open. he has only been going 3-4 years but is def hooked. he has gotten 2 does. this season there has been a 8 point of his camera so for his ego i hope he comes home with it.

when he is away i use the time to sleep in, get caught up and organized on paperwork(we are self employed) and doing almost all my xmas shopping. i beat the lines and i dont have to listen to him gripe about me not being home or letting laundry pile up to shop.

  • My DH is a BIG hunter. Bow season started here the first weekend of October (right after we returned from our honeymoon), and rifle season starts tomorrow and goes through the 29th, and then muzzle loader season starts 5 days after that and goes until the 15th of December. Phew! He really only hunts deer and turkey, but that's enough!

The longest he's been gone for is 10 days, which is when he went on a hunting trip to Ontario, Canada. His next trip is planned for Wyoming next year.

His biggest deer was from Ontario....240 pound 10 pointer. Locally, the biggest was around 160 pounds, 6 pointer.

It really used to bug me that he was gone so much in the fall, but now I'm used to it, and kind of enjoy the quiet time. I never plan on joining him in the woods--the thought of killing something like that makes me SO sad, but I certainly don't look down on people who do hunt. It's always been a part of my life--from Dad, Grandpa, and brother to DH, so I've come to terms with it.

Besides, it's kinda nice to know hubby can provide for me if aliens invade or something :)
