My DH and I are looking for a puppy for my little brother (he's 15) for Christmas. We are looking for a medium sized dog with a family disposition...we are in SYR...anyone have puppies or know people with puppies?

Re: Puppy? (NBR)
I was alway partial to the cocker spaniels. They are smart, friendly, and the males are easy to train!
A great family dog is a golden retriever... but they need a lot of exercise.. and can be a bit on the large size.
Good luck!
The joys of teaching!
There are a ton of factors that go into what type of breed would work best for your family- some dogs have super high energy, some are more laid back, etc. The biggest thing with any puppy is the amount of work and training to put in up front for housetraining, socialization, exercise etc.
I'd encourage you to research any local rescue groups that have dogs available- often they are in foster families so they can work with you to find a great match for your family and have already done the work up front to find out the dog's personality, quirks,etc.. If you're set on a puppy they often have pups and younger dogs. Plus, you'd be saving a life!
Be very careful with petfinder. They just did a big news story here in DC about how puppy mills have been using petfinder to portray themselves as a rescue but aren't. It's sad people have to be so awful and misuse what has been a great tool for finding rescue animals.
We have a shih tzu and he's the best. Calm, lovable, great with kids (my niece is now 3 but has pulled his tail, kicked him, etc. and he hasn't once growled or nipped or anything).
