MIL advise

I am about to ride in a car with my MIL for an hour. She asked me last night if I'd gotten my ballot, and I told her I hadn't checked the mail. I know she is going to bring up politics, and I have spent the last 9 months avoiding political discussion with her because she is one of the "Obama isn't even an American name" Republicans. Don't get me wrong, I love my MIL, but when she spews that crap I really have to control myself so as to not ask her if she's stupid. She doesn't think I'm voting Obama, not because I've said so but because she couldn't IMAGINE a good Christian wife doing so. (FYI, her son, my DH, is voting Obama as well).

So, any suggestions for me if she brings up politics to steer the conversation to a less heated topic?

Seriously. I'm dreading it.

Re: MIL advise

  • I always use the old "oh all politicians are the same, I don't trust any of them." Who can argue with that?
    "I
  • That's good, TTT.  If she really presses, I'd be honest but totally polite.

  • ahh well i have to go meet her now...i'll try TTT's strategy if i must, and try and head her off with talk of how unsatisfactory BIL dropping all of his classes this quarter is.  wish me luck =(
  • Is your H in the car too?  IMO it's kind of up to him to say we're voting Obama since he's the blood relative.   My FIL, the day before my wedding, announced that all gays are pedophiles and we got in an enormous fight and I was reduced to a non-sensical, sputtering mess.   That's the last time my H let me control the political discussions with his family. Embarrassed

I'm not a fan of lying about who I vote for/what I think, but leave it up to the spouse to talk to his/her family about it.

  • I would just sit silent until she shut her pie hole.  That's what I do with my office mate.

This is what I do with my FIL.

  • I am a little late...

Whenever my FIL brings up politics I just laugh good naturally and smile. Say something similiar to TTT idea and or change th subject. I never give him any ammo.

  • Also late...but I'm never one to shy away from telling people, even family and ILs what I think about politics. Yes, I'm that annoying family member. At the same time, I expect my family to do likewise. I say, just tell her you are voting for Obama if it comes up.  It's nothing to be ashamed of.

I'm the same way. ?My ILs are Catholic Republicans. ?We've gotten into it before, but usually we all keep it light hearted. ?MIL sniped a couple of months ago when we were all in Maine together and DH and I didn't go to church. ?She found a way to get a few digs in about Ellen's wedding and how gay marriage isn't ok. ?Whatever, MIL, when you get a real opinion that's rational, come on back. ? ?
