Decorating question

Can you have 1 color in almost every room of your house or are you supposed to be different in every room.  You see, I have a thing with red and I'm noticing that a lot of my rooms have red in them.  The living room is red/gold with black accents which runs into the kitchen that's black/red.  My guest bath is red/gold, guest room is red/ blue (the bedspread is the only thing red).  I'm thinking maybe I need to back away from the red.

Are there rules on this?  FWIW the living room, kitchen and the giant front room all run into one another so it makes sense to be a little cohesive there but as of right now, the only thing in the front room is DH's desk.  It's not even decorated, how sad!

Re: Decorating question

  • Its your house, make it what you want !

Our house is one color, granted we kept it that way until our 1 year fix up thing.  Now, we are thinking of colors for other rooms, but we want them in the same family ( cool grays/greens some tan )

I really like red in the kitchen ( like Americana kitchens with stars )  like a dark red, almost maroon.  Are your " reds " all one shade ?

You are with red how H and I will be with green.

  • There is no rule on whether or not you should have different colors in every room of the house .. in fact, from everything I've seen and read, having a "theme" color - one recurring color - throughout the house is the rage right now.

As PP said, make it YOUR house, do it the way YOU want it done. If you love it, it does not matter one whit what others think!

  • There are no rules for this! I personally like my rooms to be somewhat cohesive, whether they're linked by a color or overall style. Not that they have to match per se, but I like it feeling like it all goes together and is linked somehow. If you like red, then go for it, but maybe in some rooms it's just a small accent though.

  • I agree with everything thats been said. You do ur house whatever color u like. You're the one that going to see it everyday, so u should make it the way you love!!!!

  • I say go for whatever you want. I really like sage green, and it pops up all over our house, along with navy blue and maroon. I think that makes your house and decorating look cohesive!
  • Sweet!  FWIW, the red isn't dominant like I painted the walls red.  I'm not painting any walls because we're in a rental and it's stupid to paint it and then have to paint it back when we move.  So, mostly it's accents like curtains, shower curtain, dishes etc.

I'm excited to keep my red now, lol!
