Holidays and Pets

I have a pretty small family, there will only be 6 of us for Thanksgiving (myself, mom, dad, sister no. 1, sister no. 2, and dh).  We go to my parents lake house about 45 minutes north of where we live.  Anyways, my parents have a dog who always travels with us.  Sister no. 1 is insisting on bringing her cat.  Now sister no. 2 is insisting on bringing her bird.  Apparently the cat likes to eat birds (what cat doesn't?!).  Sister no. 2 assures that her bird will stay in its cage the whole time (but also mentioned that the bird likes to sing at the crack of dawn... the house is small and walls are thin).  It's one night... why can't people leave their dang pets at home?  Sheesh...

Thanks for listening to me vent!

  • The dog I can understand them bringing but yes, the cat and the bird will survive a night alone.

  • LOL!  This is a refreshing holiday dilemna to read about after all of the "my family vs. his family" drama!

Well, I guess it's up to your folks since it's their house, but I say Sylvester and Tweety should stay home (esp. if it's  a short trip).  Dogs are higher maintenance.  I would comfortably leave my cats alone for a weekend.  I never had a bird, but I imagine extra food and water could be left out.

Yep! I'll agree with that one. :)

I'm thinking the same thing. We leave our cats alone for weekends occasionally and they're fine - they actually love having the freedom to jump on the furniture and to scratch their claws on anything and everything. And although my ILs usually take their dog along if they're going to be away from home for an overnight, they don't always do it, and so long as he can be fed, watered, and occasionally walked, it's never been a problem. A bird - that's random, but I have a feeling she just doesn't want to be left out of the "animal brigade." But yeah, let your parents make the rules and bring a noise machine in case the bird goes nutso. And if you can, sleep on opposite ends of the house from Bird Lady and her cage.
  • I have a love bird and never bring her on overnights or weekend trips.  I make sure she has fresh food and water before I leave.  We also have 2 dogs, so they are the ones we HAVE to bring if we want to go anywhere.  Hope that helps!
  • I understand the dog, but leave the cat and the bird at home! At least the cat has a litter box that doesn't necessarily need to be cleaned everyday and the same with the bird. My sister's in-laws bring their pets to every family function - even the ones where they go home within a few hours. People can be a little ridiculous...

  • The dog is understandable, for sure.  It's my parents house and their dog, to their lake house is the only time they bring her out of town and she loves it.  Here in the city she just gets a backyard to run around, up there she can run all around outside she loves it.  Anyways, the cat thing is dumb.  My sister refuses to leave her cat overnight for some weird reason.  Seriously, she's going to be gone like 24 hours.  My other sister and the bird is just stupid.  I tried to talk to her about the bird possibly waking everyone up (unfortunately all the rooms are right next to each other so no way to get away from the sound) and she said the bird "sings" from sun up to sun down but that we'll get used to it.  I'm ready to bang my head on a wall.  Not to mention cat and bird will be in the same car going up there and coming back (though dh and I will not be in that car thank God).  I just think they're so ridiculous.

  • Um, yeah there is no real reason why the cat and bird should be coming.  Cats can have water and food left out for them and they have litter boxes.  Birds can also be left with water and food.  Dogs need to be let outside to use the bathroom - unless you have a doggy litter box.  Just talking from what the pets need - the cat and bird can fend for themselves for a weekend.

I can't believe that the sister with the bird would bring it - who brings a bird along?  Also, I can't believe she's bringing the bird to a place where there is a cat that likes to eat animals of the feathered variety...
