I saw on the homemade laundry detergent thread that you are interested in cloth diapering?

I am due in January so I don't have personal experience yet. But you guys should REALLY check out the cloth diapering board/eco friendly family board on thebump.

I was surprised to find that CD have REALLY evolved. The are now basically a disposable diaper, that you wash.

They have a waterproof, yet breathable outer layer, and multiple layers of super absorbent bamboo, cotton, or hemp material.

The only extra work is about 2 loads of laundry a week. That's really not much extra work IMO.

Some will argue that there isn't a big price difference when you factor in water/electric etc. but here is a link,(below) you can do the math on that yourself and see there are significant savings.

Oh, we are planning on spending less than 600 total on diapers for our LO. This 600 should last till potty training and through another child. So even if we ended up spending the ENTIRE 600, had to replace 100 worth of diaper for the next one, and couldn't re-sell ANY of them because they were too used. That would only be 350 in diapers. There is no reason we wouldn't be able to re-sell at least a few of them.

Our laundry comes out to somewhere between 100-180 a year (this is just diapers). That is doing ALL hot washes in a top loader using home made detergent (the detergent I make is about 2cents a wash). The price range depends on how much I use the dryer. 100 is line drying everything (I already line dry most of DH and my clothes already just because I feel like they last longer and we're poor haha)

Anyways, I'm done with my sales pitch :S.

GL :) and happy research. :)

  • Thanks WannaBe!  Yeah a friend of mine from college FB recently that they were going to do cloth diapering with baby #2.  It shocked me, if she can do it I can too.  The next step would be getting DH on board...when I mention it he gets all grossed out.  I'll definitely check into it more.  We aren't even expecting yet, still TTC so I have some time to do some research.  Thanks again!

  • After I looked up home-made laundry detergent stuff, I looked up cloth diapering stuff too.  It really seems like it would be a good idea for so many reasons.  My mom actually used cloth diapers on us to save money and she still talks about how it was so worth it.  I'm not pregnant or even TTC yet, but I do like to plan ahead =).  And become more self-sufficient!  This was great info, thanks for posting it!
