CMC, Hezz, PG, and other photogs

Did you guys read any particular books when learning how to use your DSLR? I'm sick of not knowing how to use mine, you know, NOT on the auto settings.

HALP.

Re: CMC, Hezz, PG, and other photogs

  • from lurking on the bump photog board, I learned that all you need to know is the word "bokeh"

that is the essence of all photography everywhere.

    (well...bumpwide, I guess)

    you are welcome.

  • We have a photography group at work so I learn a lot through reading their emails etc. Also in the summer a group of us did some walks where we took pictures and learned about the fancy stuff our camera's do. That is probably where I learned the most.
  • I read a lot of books when I got my first awesome camera, but it was a film slr. So, I still really don't know what I'm doing at all on my dslr.  I tried to read my manual and play around with the settings to get a feel for each one. There are a ton of photography blogs out there that do steps by steps. And also, photoshop is your friend. I find that it fixes anything I don't like about the exposures and then some.
  • I'll second Understanding Exposure, great primer for learning how to tinker with shutter speed, aperture and ISO to get the effects you want.  I found the user manual great for understanding all the adjustments and more importantly their shortcuts to save time and not fumble around.

I spend most of the time in aperture priority rather than full auto or full manual.  Gives me some control, but I don't have to adjust everything.

I just got a speedlight and spent the weekend playing with it.  SOOOOO much better for indoor shots, the difference is amazing.

  • Excellent, thank you! I want to take the nice camera on our Thanksgiving trip, so I need to buckle down and learn how to use it.
