How do I get rid of musty smell?
In my basement.... It is very strong.
There is a carpet down there, do I have to remove it?
If the basement door is left open, you can smell it by the back door right away.
Help!!!
Re: How do I get rid of musty smell?
First, check for a water leak. Musty smells are caused by excess moisture.
If there's no leak and it's just a damp basement (exposed cinder block or concrete walls/floor will cause this or if you live in a humid area) then buy a good dehumidifier. We keep a dehumidifier running 24/7 (well, it's stops and starts depending on the humidity level we have it set at) so our basement doesn't get musty. We live in a humid area and half of our basement is a utility room with exposed cinder block walls and a concrete floor.

Start with a dehumidifier. You should have it anyway. We didn't have one when we moved in and when it got warm and humid outside the basement started smelling. We brought home a dehumidifier and 24 hours later the smell was almost gone and never came back.
If that doesn't solve it, you might have to look at the carpet/walls. If something is molding it will smell musty. If the carpet is right on the concrete without a plastic layer it will almost certainly mold at some point.
