Christmas Cards?

I read an article in Real Simple this weekend about what a waste holiday cards can be. I've always enjoyed getting cards and photos. But the article was right, I mean by the time you print/buy cards, address them, mail them, its something pricey that most people end up throwing away and most people won't notice if they don't receive one. It also talked about  how a holiday letter made more sense b/c of the updates, effort and time that is put into one. (I've never received one or written one.) Made me start thinking about if I should even bother this year? If you didn't just get married, you don't have any children, is it worth it? Anyone have thoughts on this?

Re: Christmas Cards?

  • Call me crazy, but I love Christmas cards, I send about 70 every year! It's a nice way to stay in touch, let people know you are thinking of them, etc. I don't like the newsletters, as I think they can seem a little show off, like if you had a bad year, what do you write??

I sent them when I was single, and send them from us now,and now it's usually a picture of us, the dogs or some combo. I don't get hurt if someone just throws it out or something, but I do trim our list if we haven't heard from someone in awhile...

  • I read the same article. I still really enjoy sending and receiving cards as well. I'm not a big newsletter fan, so I usually stick to the classic card or a photo card if some event (like the wedding) warrants one. This year, I think Perry will be featured on a photo card. Smile

I could have written this! Except we send about 100, and have cats instead of dogs ... but yeah. :)

This too. BUT,  I actually write a note in each one. Not just "happy holidays! love C and K" I write a little "what we've been doing, how is so and so, etc" note in each one to personalize it. I also trim the list down if we don't get them back or if we have been really out of touch. I do about 50 each year. But I'm struggling for what to use for a photo this year since we don't have kids and we're not newly weds. I'm hoping we'll get a nice shot on the cruise in time for me to get them printed up and sent out. I usually do more of a happy new year focus, since half of my family is Jewish anyway.

  • Interesting. It is very true but I do like to receive cards. And have sent them the last 2 years. I save some every year but not all of course. I usually save the photo cards and put them in some sort of album.

I'm excited to send this years of course! Wink I like to get newsletters from some people but others I would give the Huh? to. I am to lazy to write one.

I think your cute baby bump should be featured on this years card!

  • DH and I have sent photo xmas cards every year since we got married- and this year I am MOST excited about!!!  Just waiting on our pro pics from the photo shoot to come in the mail (dvd) to order them!!!

We send only like 30ish... but each year the list grows!  I also keep a spreadsheet of who we send to and who we receive from... if two or three years go by that we DONT receive a card from someone, we stop sending to them, as well (unless they are older or something)... that helps us to save on sending to people who most likely don't appreciate them!!

I am NOT a fan of the letters with updates.... I mean, if we're that close then I should already know these things... and if we aren't that close... honestly... I probably don't care! LOL  That's mean, I know!!!  But that's what FB is for! hahah

I truly think that U.S. Mail and handwritten letters, etc are becoming a lost artform, and it really upsets me!!  I enjoy getting CARDS in the mail (that aren't BILLS haha)

  • They *are* a waste, but I love them anyway. We usually send a newsletter to close (well, formerly close? we've both lost touch with a lot of people in the endless moves) friends & family, enclosed in a card.

I'm entertaining doing one of snapfish's new newsletter photo cards but will prob wait until we have a baby.

  • Last year we had a photo of Anne... I was thinking this year maybe making cards myself to be a little more personable... you know b/c I need another project to add to the list.

    Amber I agree with Paige!

  • I only send out a few cards, less than 20. To people I am close with. I don't just send a card to send a card. Also year I bought Christmas postcards from Hallmark. Less waste b/c no envelope, and cheaper b/c of a post card stamp. I am going to buy some this year too off etsy. We have no news to put in a letter. I love reading them from other people though!
  • I love sending (& receiving Christmas cards)!  We only send 20-30 and have been doing photo cards since we've been together.  I still have to figure out which picture to use this year or if I want to take some more to pick from.  I've never received a newsletter, but have heard of people who send them.  As much that goes on in our lives, I feel like I'd have a hard time writting it all down, and remembering everything to write.  Maybe once we have kids we will send them.
  • I love getting and sending Christmas cards.  I used to do an annual letter b/c I moved A LOT, but stopped that last year and started doing a photo card with personal note.  I'll do the same thing this year.  We send about 25-30 after scaling back our list.  Is it a waste of paper, money, and time?  Not to me.

  • I love doing Christmas cards and getting them!  We only did photo cards the year we got married and used a wedding photo, we won't do photo cards again until we have kids.  I don't send out a ton of them but I think it's nice.  I'm not crazy about the holiday letter but I don't know anyone that does it.

I just picked ours out this weekend, they have this cute sea shell wreath on them, I love them!

  • I love sending/receiving Christmas Cards!  I send about 40-50 every year.  Our wedding year it was a photo card with a wedding picture.  Last year and this year are just generic holiday cards.  I won't send another photo card until we have a baby.

Same here. We may do a photo card of DH & I getting a Xmas tree.
