Getting Ready for Thanksgiving

How's everyone doing with their Thanksgiving planning?  I have my menu made out.  Still adding items to the grocery list.  I tested out a pumpkin pecan bundt cake recipe.  It turned out great but Richard wants pumpkin cheesecake for dessert.  I'll have to find a recipe and test that out.

We wanted to buy our Butterball turkey over the weekend but only found 13-16 pounders.  We want at least a 25 pound turkey to feed an army.  Will keep looking for one.

As a reminder to myself, I still need to buy the following:

- Fat seperator

- Roasting Pan

- Turkey Platter

Thank goodness for BB&B and the $5 coupon I received in the mail.

Re: Getting Ready for Thanksgiving

  • I bought the turkey this weekend but suckered my mom into cooking it for my H's family since they were only going to have a ham. The only other thing I have to make are cheesecake bites and I've made them enough to know I won't screw them up (knock on wood, anyway).

  • I had to google fat separator and believe me, the mental image I was getting looks nothing like a measuring cup. LOL

I believe I may be certifiably insane. I've agree to do Thanksgiving twice. Once for my side of the family this Sunday and then again on T-day for BIL, his kids and girlfriend.

I have both menu's done and I've picked up a few things on sale at the store. I'm also kind of worrying myself that I'm not even mildly stressed about this all yet.

  • We haven't even figured out where/what we are doing for Thanksgiving yet. DH's parents are going out of town that Friday so they want to have dinner on Thanksgiving (usually we do their house on Friday) and my parents want to do dinner on Thanksgiving too. We really need to work a schedule out since we don't have enough space to host everyone at our house yet. And my birthday is that Saturday and my niece's birthday is on Sunday...it will be a fun weekend!

  • Debdebdol-  I found, a couple years ago, a recipe for a pumpkin cheesecake that was the recipe they use at Cheesecake Factory.  I had never had it there before, but I made it and it was like pumpkin heaven in my mouth.  If you goodle Cheesecake factory pumpkin cheesecake, you will find the recipe.  I HIGHLY recommend it!

  • I decided to brine the turkey for lunch at my mom's, also making the usual mashed potates and cherry pie.  Then doing nothing for dinner at ILs house.

Was kinda hoping to have both families over to our house.  MIL squashed that right quick.  My fam hates going to her house cuz it's in BFE and up a giant mountain (mom is afraid of heights).  Apperently MIL isn't "comfortable" at our house.  Sorry we don't have a 6,000 square foot mansion on the top of a mountain, but you can still come over...Super sucks cuz I was REALLY getting excited about hosting. :(

But I can still look forward to my first brined turkey.  Reserving our fresh one at Whole Foods on the way home tonight.

  • I set my menu and bought everything I need besides veggies, bread stuffs, wine and beer.

I also got 8 extra plates at Le Dollar Store yesterday since I only have 12 place settings.

My inlaws are pissed that MFD has to have Thanksgiving at his house and "break tradition." Whatever. We're happy to be hosting, my mother is tickled pink to see her daughter start her own traditions, and my one sister in law is saying F U parents and coming to our house.

  • We are not hosting this year. I hosted for the ILs last year, but we're going to my aunts on T-day, probably bringing a rhubarb pie and whatever else they might need that day. We'll see. GL to everyone trying it for the first time this year. I had fun last year, but there was a lot of work involved in the experience. :)

  • Moleson- Thanks for the tip I'll have to give it a try.

LTB- I had not seen a fat seperator before.  I'll need it since this will be my first time making gravy from scratch...yum.
