My office doesn't have a dress code. The secretaries all wear jeans every single day... and not like nice jeans and a nice shirt, but casual jeans and casual shirts, and sneakers. The partner I work for mostly wears jeans - a variety of casual and nice. The other female partner wears cordoroys and casual pants. All the male partners wear khakis, dark jeans, and some wear suits. The female associates are probably Ann Taylor Loft, with lots of dark jeans and cordoroys, flats, loafers, and sneakers.
Most of what I have is nicer than that. I've got a couple pairs of pants and one pair of nice jeans, but beyond that, I've got a ton of skirts and button down shirts, and mostly heels. Beyond that, everything I have is too casual...Old Navy tshirts and stuff.
I'm overweight, so I feel like I need to do a little bit more to look nice. But a couple people have commented that "I'm always so dressed up." I really don't want to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe (especially since this is not a permanent job), but I don't want to look like a stuffy freak for wearing skirts and heels (especially since I want them to like me).
Should I suck it up and buy more clothes or just deal with being the stuffy girl?
Re: Now I need work fashion advice
Can you pair dressy pieces with less dressy pieces? Like a skirt or slacks with a cotton tee, or a button down top with dark jeans?
I wouldn't change my wardrobe entirely until I had a permanent position, personally. No sense in spending money unless you have to, right?
Agree with Mrs. You should always dress for the job you want to have not the one you have. I would rather over dress than under dress.
I agree with LMW. Maybe just a few more casual shirts paired with your nicer pants or skirts?
Oh, and welcome to Calfiornia. I seriously have an entirely different wardrobe since living here.
I don't have the right clothes for the weather here, so that is complicating my problems. I have a few of those ribbed turtlenecks, which would be perfect, but it's too warm.
Maybe I'll watch the sales at Ann Taylor Loft to grab a couple more tops. But as long as a few people say I'm ok dressed like the preppy east coaster that I am, I won't feel too bad.
Yeah, I'd say hit up the Loft for some pieces on the more casual side of business casual. I work for a super-stuffy Big firm, and even our Cali attorneys are super-laid back. It won't hurt to have a few more pairs of slacks and light-weight twinsets in your wardrobe.
(I, too, prefer to be overdressed)
We had a new employee that over dressed for a while and after a point it just got ridiculous. I think most normal people realize that you can't just go out and buy new clothes - especially if they know you don't have a high paying job and just moved and are trying to get settled and what not. Still, if ou are missing a few options wardrobe-wise then that has to be dealt with at some point anyways.
I would say to try to make due with what you have with the general idea that you don't "have" to dress up and also know that you could probably stand to grown your wardrobe over the next few months.
GL!
I am all for overdressing since this isn't a permanent position. Like pps mentioned, mix some more business formal wear with business casual stuff and you will be fine. I went through something similar when I went from a business formal environment where I wore suits all of the time to wearing suits only when I am super cold. lol. Someone told me once that it was strange to not see me in a suit jacket, and that was after 2 years of working with the more casual business attire. Now I have actually blended in more and I am on year 3. Eek!
FYI, I Googled and found an online code for LOFT that gets you 20% off and free shipping. It was great since they have a ton of stuff on sale.
For the job - it's a temp, so who cares?
But sounds like you need some jeans for your new laid-back world. Personally, I'd buy some jeans to have for this job and beyond.
