Honda Insight -- anyone?

Does anyone have any personal experience with the Honda Insight? My car is literally about to die, so we're looking at getting a new car...well not new, used....but as new as possible. :) I've been looking at the Insight because it's a Hybrid and gets great gas mileage (40/43). I've been reading reviews and we're going to test drive it pretty soon..but I thought I'd check to see if any of you have one and what you thought :)

Re: Honda Insight -- anyone?

  • I don't own one, but we did a lot of comparison shopping between the Insight and Prius before we ended up buying our Prius.

Before test driving, I read a lot about how the ride isn't very smooth b/c the car is so light - even lighter than a Prius - and I was skeptical, but after test driving we decided we preferred the Prius to the Insight.  It really did ride smoother and quieter.

We also couldn't justify the cost of the Insight vs. the lower gas mileage compared to the Prius.  The Insight is only very slightly cheaper than the Prius, and the Prius averages ~10mpg higher than the Insight.  A friend of mine has a Civic hybrid that's only a few years old.  When he first started driving it, he was getting right at the specs for mpg.  Now, only a few years later, he's barely averaging 35mpg and nothing about his driving habits have changed.  Honda has apparently told him that's what happens over time, so he's pretty livid over it.  I'm not sure what the issue with his car is exactly, but that coupled with the lower mpg rating in the first place just didn't make it worth it to us.

FWIW, I was really pulling for the Insight just to go against the grain of everyone owning a Prius, but in the end, we both decided the Prius was a better choice for us.  I love my Prius and am very happy with our purchase.

  • I've only test driven one but I didn't like it. The ride didn't seem very smooth. And with the design of the car there's a big black line through the middle of the back window. The Honda guy even told me that it wasn't a good car and there's better EF options out there.
  • I'm a proud owner of an Insight! I bought it this past June and so far I've been very pleased. My fiance also bought one at the same time (yes, we have two). I wanted to own a hybrid for a couple of reasons: to promote the production of more fuel efficient vehicles and alternative energy, to reduce my CO2 footprint, and to increase interest among friends, family, and really anyone who saw me driving my snazzy little hybrid around town. Also, I liked that the Insight was more accessible (read: affordable!) than all the other hybrids on the market. I get about 600-700 km to a tank (about 40litres (10.6 gal) i believe). Aside from all of that, I am very interested to see how well the Insight holds up in our brutal Canadian winters. Yes, KlassyWithaK is right, there is a somewhat awkward bar across the back window but you get used to it, and that's about the only negative thing I can think of!

Awesome, good news to hear :) My reasons for wanting the Insight are exactly what you mentioned...I love that it's affordable. I've seen 2010's for under 17,000 in my area with only like 13,000 miles. And the black bar thing won't bug me...I have the same issue with my current ride (Pontiac Aztek), so I think I'll be okay :) I'm going to test drive it soon...I think if I don't hate it after the drive, we're going to get one...only because it's the most affordable EF option out there right now that fits our needs....Right now my only concern for the Insight is the size since I'm so used to the Aztek, but we'll see...as long as a car seat can fit back there, I'm good :)
