Do any of you ladies have any recommendations for a low cost health insurance provider??
Long story short I went to planned parenthood today for my annual and to get more birth control because I am out, I was on the low cost government program when we lived in Iowa, but when I applied for it here in Texas we got denied because DH and I make too much together according to their stupid sheet to qualify. It's so dumb because true we may make more than what their sheet says that we qualify for but we aren't just going on shopping sprees with that money..it's going to rent and electric bills and heating bills and food..important things that we need not want and there's way we could even afford an annual exam after paying for the bills.
I tried explaining this to the lady and asked if there was anything else at all I could qualify for and she goes 'that's all we can do. It's not really our problem if you can't pay for it' b****! I'm so upset because now I'm well overdue for that exam and now without any birth control which we need...
*sigh* I don't know what to do. I can't seem to find any other low cost health clinics here in town except for Planned Parenthood. I don't even know if we could afford monthly payments for a health insurance company but I thought I would just see who you all were using.
I don't get it through my work, and DH has it through his school for free but we can't afford what it costs to put me on it.
Re: health insurance provider?
I,
I'm sorry Laura! I don't have much advice for you - sorry! My initial thought was to get it through DH's school but you said that was too expensive. For the government program that you used to be one...does that HAVE to be your combined income or since you only need it for yourself, can it just be based on YOUR income? I don't know the program so I'm pretty ignorant about the requirements.
I will say this - just start doing some online price quotes for as many places as you can think of. There was a time when I had started a new job and I have a 90 day waiting period before I could get health benefits. During those 3 months, I paid for short-term benefits and if I remember correctly it was like $90 a month. But that was for Georgia and it was with Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Good luck!!!
I would look online for a state-sponsered women's clinic, NOT planned parenthood. I know in California there are several, and they offer additional resources and programs for family planning that planned parenthood does not.
Also, is it cost-effective to sign up for the minimal amount of classes at your community college to get access to their health center? Maybe you could take a fun art class, or a dance class or something you're interested in once a week just to be able to use their campus health clinic. Meds probably wont be free but they will most likely be a lot cheaper!
Good luck!!
Well I assumed it was just for myself too but they asked for his because we are married which I thought was kind of stupid. Its an exam for me and birth control for me to take not for DH.
I've tried looking at quotes online but the thing is even $90 a month I don't think we would be able to afford
Money is super tight for us right now, but I feel like this is a high priority thing that we should be doing..
Laura, you're young, right? Can you go back on your parents' insurance? You're allowed to be on your parents' until you're 26 I think, but I don't know any of the details of that.
Health insurance is so important! You would be totally screwed if something (God forbid) happened. And, kids are expensive too lol. It's awful that you can't get it through your job. I'm sorry you have to deal with this. Vibes!
