very TMI OBGYN Q. Will probably dd later. =P

How bad is it to have an annual GYN exam at the end of one's AF?  Will they not blink an eye or is it totally gross or not even possible to do the exam/pap/etc?  If it makes a difference, my AF should be pretty light by then.

I've been trying to get in to have my annual for over a month now and of course I realize this week that it's very possible that AF will not be over by my appt tomorrow morning.  I just called to see if I could reschedule for later in the week or next week and they don't have anything until December. I miss the days when my Dr. was new to the practice and had tons of availability!

  • call and ask. i think different docs handle it differently. mine says as long as its light its okay. i can't remember how they defined "light" though?
  • I'll have to go out to the car and call later.  I hate being in a cubicle where everyone can hear each other's conversations!  Embarrassed

  • Eh, my doc says it's no big deal.  She says that if they never see anyone who's bleeding, they would spend all their time rescheduling appointments.  Don't know if you're getting a pap or not.....that's the only thing that I might wonder about.

  • i know she prefers you not to be... but it's okay if you are.  I (thankfully) have always just gotten lucky when I scheduled those appts.
  • I asked my OBGYN this once for this exact reason and they said that since they are doing a pap they would have to reschedule.... I don't think I clarified light vs. mid-period though....

  • finally ran out to the parking lot to make the call.  They said if it's heavy I should reschedule but if it's spotting its okay.  I tried to ask her what if it's in between heavy and spotting but she didn't really answer me.  I guess I'll wait and see until tomorrow morning.

  • Mine doesn't care at all.
  • If it's light, it'll be fine.
  • its not a big deal.  i remember seeing so much gross stuff just in my 6 weeks of Ob/Gyn that a pelvic exam with some blood wasn't too bad.  that's just me...and i have a very low tolerance for gyn stuff so i wouldn't be surprised if your gyn didn't notice.  but you could ask just to sure

  • If you're just doing a pelvic without a Pap test, the end of your period should be fine. The problem with doing the Pap is that it will be hard to get a clean sample (blood can obscure the results.)
