Can we talk about airport scanners?

It seems to be all the buzz on other boards.  I don't travel a ton, but I personally don't have a problem with them.  Last Christmas, we flew home from Germany a few days after the bomb scare, and ALL passengers got a full patdown before entering a secured area to board the plane.  I don't have a problem with the scans since the person viewing the scans is not present.  I'd rather have piece of mind, b/c quite frankly, I don't want to die in a plane.

Re: Can we talk about airport scanners?

  • when i flew last weekend, i had to do one of the full body scans in the tampa airport. it doesn't bother me because i would rather be safe than sorry.

  • Not a fan of the scanner, but I'll do it. The pat down though? not so much. I don't need a stranger patting my vajayjay and bewbies. No thank you.
  • the thing that annoys me the most is taking my shoes off. just because it's annoying.
  • DH was ranting about this last night. He thinks it's ridiculous and that security has gone way too far. I agree to a point but I'd rather be safe and just deal with it. I mean, I doubt the families affected  by 9/11 would complain about it.
  • oh, and after seeing the airport security in amsterdam with sub-machine guns strapped to their chests....the scanners don't seem so bad.

seriously...dh always talks about the security in china and hk. it's totally crazy compared to the states.

now granted the airport on the island of santorini was the saddest thing ever, with MAYBE 1 security guard...but the dudes at schipol? INTENSE.

  • It doesn't bother me. Maybe it's because I used to work on a base and was subject to security at any time. Maybe it's because I get wanded and have to show my socks every time I leave work. Whatever it may be, I'm fine with it. I'd rather not be patted down, but I'll live.

DH has metal in his legs and has been held back and strip searched in the past. Thank goodness the technology is better now.

  • I'd rather be safe then sorry. I do think they should do better to sort out the families from people just flying solo. I almost missed my flight because a family with strollers and all the other stuff parents have to bring along.

  • I have not been in an airport for a few years, so I have not had to deal with it yet, but I agree with a lot of you that I would rather be safe than sorry. I don't think it's really THAT big of a deal.

  • Yes I have a problem with it. I don't want naked pictures of me floating around while someone with political ties to the Department of Homeland security is making a profit off these machines. Anyone see the post where imagines of people have already been leaked?

Additionally a leading Israeli security official has called the machines useless and expensive which is why they do not have them in TLV airport. The Israelis know their sh!t when it comes to security, if they think the machines are useless, I am taking it as gospel. This country is broke, we can't afford expensive ineffective equipment.

If TSA wants to Xray sh!t they can start with CARGO. I was in Europe when the recent phuckery went down , these invasive X-Rays would have done nothing to prevent the recent Cargo scare.

Finally I am PISSED at the thought of having my crotch felt up by a TSA employee. PISSED.  Did I mention I am rather fond of the 4 Amendment??? For those thinking it, DH and I HAVE to fly as we have family in the States , South America, and Europe/Asia.

  • I'm kinda with Mer on this one. The 4th Amendment is an oldie, but a goodie. I took constitutional law in H.S. - very enlightening. Surprise

But really, I don't want to be Xray'd every time I fly and I sure as hell am not ok with being felt up just so I can fly. I have not yet read up on the Isreali way, but they sure seem to have it figured out much better than we do (hello, war zone?)

And why DON'T we have the machine-gun toting guards in the airport??? Those guys have been in airports in other countries for yeeeeeeeeeears. Seems like they'd be a better deterrent than an Xray machine, huh?

  • I'm not a fan. I can just avoid flying, but I feel bad for friends that have jobs that require constant travel.
  • Personally, I feel sorry for the guy that has to look at naked scans of my out of shape, overweight a$s. Its going to look really great when I try to get the top tier of my wedding cake through security next week....

For those who didn't read it, here are a few highlights:

She did not tell me that she was going to touch my breasts.

She then felt around my waist. She then moved to the bottoms of my legs.

She then felt my inner thighs and my vagina area, touching both of my labia.

She did not tell me that she was going to touch my vagina area or my labia.

    SERIOUSLY?? Is this really acceptable???

  • I'm not OK with them either. They are not effective, they use ionizing radiation and they are a clear breach of the Fourth Amendment. Even the security at the AFB where my DH works isn't this invasive.
