Yaz - what has been your experience?

My gyno has switched me to Yaz and I am suppose to start on Sunday. I had been having problems with previous BCP. Mid cycle spotting, migraines, low sex drive. Just curious what others think of Yaz. I am considering stopping the BCP and trying NFP.

Re: Yaz - what has been your experience?

  • I think it really is different for everyone.  I hated it.  I did have a slightly lower sex drive, but the big issue was I never got my period.  Once every 4 months for a day or two.  I was constantly bloated and crabby becuase of it.  Not to mention the fact that it is a total waste of money to pay for birth control and pregnancy tests every month!!
  • I've been on it for a while and I actually like it. I won't say I love it, because I haven't loved any type of birth control pill I've been on but it is the best one I have been on so far (and in 7 years, I have been on about 6 different pills, plus the nuva ring). It doesn't kill my sex drive the way other pills have, and it doesn't seem to give me frequent yeast infections or breast tenderness, the way other pills have also done.

I spot every once in a while and I do get headaches occasionally, but I am not sure that the headaches are due to Yaz. I also have had some issues with anxiety, but again I don't know if I can blame Yaz for that. It has been a good pill for me, since the libido-death was a major issue for me with every other pill.I usually get a period every month, but it's very light.

I also want to get off of the pill, but having tried NFP in the past, I know that I am just not diligent enough to keep on top of it. I hated waking up and having to take my temp. every morning, and chart. I was just not on top of it enough for it to have been reliable birth control for me. But if you can be very thorough, go for it!

  • I think I've been on Yaz for over a year now(though recently I was switched to the generic version Gianvi). At first I LOVED being on Yaz. My face doesn't explode in acne, my period is no longer 10 days long & is lighter, my period is also predictable down to the day now, my irrational mood swings are gone, reduced cramping, I don't feel sick, and I don't get physically sick anymore. The only down side is that I have gained quite a bit of weight. I believe the pill has contributed to that, however, I do not believe it is the main reason. My diet isn't exactly great & motivating myself to exercise is a struggle. I'm trying different forms of exercise, & I hope to have the coming off soon. For me the pros outweigh the cons, however everyone will react differently.
  • quite a scary experience. Not only did I gain a lot of weight (and I worked out 5 days a week), but I was literally nauseous just about every single day. I just couldnt take how nauseous it made me. I put up with it for a while until I started getting bad chest pains that got worse and worse and I said forget it Im gonna die of a heart attack. I just went back on ortho tri cyclen lo after that.

BCPs can be very scary. One of my best friend's sister died from a blood clot caused by her BCPs

  • It really depends on the person. I hated it. I started getting 2-3 day migraines, it completely erased my sex drive, I was always super emotional and I had cramps that felt like my insides were being cut out with a butter knife. The only good thing about it is I had a 3 day period.

I thought about stopping bcp and switching to nfp too, but I decided I'd give bcp one more chance. I start Ortho Lo next month.

  • I've been on Yaz for over a year and love it!  It reduced my periods from almost 2 weeks total time to about 3 days.  For the first 3 months of it, I did have some breakthrough spotting, but it wasn't bad.  It cleared up my acne and my mood was a LOT better, too!  I suffered from horribly painful migraines before I started taking it, and it got rid of them completely.  I occasionally get a headache (usually right when I start) but its not near the intensity I used to get and a simple Advil works to knock it out.

Overall, I loved it.  Then they switched to the generic (Gianvi) and that one I HATE!  I'm in my last of the 3 month pack I have of the generic and am going back to the name brand.  The generic does nothing for the acne or mood, and its also been causing me to get horribly painful leg cramps, which I never had before in my life.  I'm really looking forward to getting back to Yaz b/c for me, it works wonders.  GL!

  • I was on it since it first came out (off of it now during our TTA/TTC era) but i never had any problems aside from a somewhat low sex drive. What i mean by that is, my drive would be low if we didnt have sex, but once we did - my drive sustained....

oh and my breasts got larger - YAH!

my periods came like clockwork and i never spotted - but like PPs mentioned above, everyone is different.

  • I liked it more than any of the other pills I tried.  It completely cleared up my skin and regulated my moods very well
  • I can't say anything about sex drive, as when I took it, it was to regulate my period before I was sexually active.  However, having just come off of a BCP that gave me suicidal thoughts, I loved that it was such a low dose.  And because of that fact, I was afraid to try anything else.  After Seasonal, Yaz actually got me feeling like me again.  I now have an IUD though, because pumping hormones through my body scares me after that first instance and years off of Yaz.   I did love it compared to my first bcp experience though...now I love my mirena though (small dose of hormones located in one spot vs going all througout my body).
  • Yaz literally made me crazy.  It gave me horrible mood swings - crying hysterically, freaking out over the tiniest of things, etc.  It also did not help with lightening my flow or preventing cramps.  Good luck!

  • Everyone's body is different. Some people have had an aweful experience with it (lot's of lawsuits lately too) and some people have loved it.

One thing to be aware of is that dramatic weight gain or lose can decrease the effectiveness of it. My friend's new doctor was floored when he found out that her previous doctor hadn't informed her of that. She gained weight on her honeymoon and is barely a newlywed with a kid on the way b/c she didn't know weight gain could make the birth control less effective.

Know ALL the side effects and risks before you go on it.That way you can make an informed decision about if it's right for you or not.  Also, it's very new, so remember that it hasn't been tested long enough for people to really know if there are any long term side effects.

  • I was originally on Yasmin for a couple years and then switched to Yaz..I want to say I was on it for 4 plus years, was on birth control for a total of 7 years. I have always suffered from menstrual migraines, but I can't tell you for sure if Yaz caused it or not. I have been off bc for 8 months now and I feel just the same as when I was on it..(besides being pregnant now!)
  • I have been on BCP since I was 12 and never had a problem until Yaz.  My blood pressure became dangerously high (180/110) and I had horrible headaches.  After a year of trying to find the cause I switched to Loestrin 24, and all of the sudden my blood pressure was normal again.

While it is different for everyone, Yaz definitely has a bad reputation. There are so many options out there, I would avoid Yaz if possible.

  • I went on Yaz because my period usually incapacitates me for at least 2 days (doubled over in pain and vomiting wee!) At first it was good, I felt less sick (still not great) and it made my period shorter. However I had insane mood swings. My husband and I almost called off our engagement because I would freak out about nothing. He was worried about me because I would be fine one minute and the next I would be crying hysterically. For me the side effects were not justified by the results. I was on it for four months and noticed a difference within a week of going off of it.

  • My experience has been similar to Chocolate's. I was switched off of Tri-cyclen Lo because of how miserable I was on it(extreme pain, bloating, random bouts of crying and aggression that went away as soon as I stopped the pills, periods did not change all that much, VERY VERY low sex drive). I have found that Yaz has solved all of these problems and have been on it nearly a year but I can't afford it every month which is messing things up(it's not covered by my healthcare).
