It's about time (Prince William engaged!)

Here is the people article.  I hope they live happily ever after!

Can't wait to see the wedding....I'm a sucker for this stuff! Stick out tongue

Re: It's about time (Prince William engaged!)

  • I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to be marrying into a royal family.  Crazy!  I bet all of England is freaking out right about now.  They have been freaking out for years already!  :-)

  • I heard about that on the radio this morning.  I bet they will have a beautiful wedding!  I can't wait to see what her dress will look like.

  • I am excited for the wedding details.  I cannot wait to see what a royal wedding will look like in 2011.  The bride to be is always dressed really cute when I see her in photos so I assume that she has good taste and hope that this royal wedding will have a modern, chic twist to it.
  • I'm a sucker for these things too! I just finished reading an article about them in Vanity Fair - interesting but full of speculation and amazingly poorly written (however I think the article was bits and pieces from a larger book - so poorly edited, I guess, is more fit).

Unfortunately, my family - or rather my husband and his family - are very poo-poo about the royal family and consider it terribly "working class" to find them interesting. They all hated Diana, especially my FIL,  while my MIL and DH think the monarchy should be done away with completely (they say it's because they are French and well . . . off with their heads!).  They probably think my fascination with the Royals is completely tacky and ridiculous - and perhaps it is, but dang-it, it is fun!

Of course, these are the same people who laugh at my ongoing request to see Stonehenge and say "But Laura, why? It is just a bunch of rocks in a field."

    Yay Wills and Kate!

I find their perspective on liking the royals fascinating!

Do they know what Stonehenge is?  How long it has been there?  The theories about how it was built and why??  It's incredibly interesting!  Definitely go see it next time you're over there :-)  It's out in the middle of nowhere but cool to see!

It is interesting to say the least. I've heard comments ranging from "Diana was a manipulative money-grubber" to "She was just stupid - a foolish stupid girl and they are better off without her." and then there is the critique of some friends who supposedly had a picture of the queen hanging in their front room . . . I guess that was meant to imply that they may have a middle-class house (but only a semi-detached, not a proper detached) but they were really working class at heart. The horror!

And yet - on Christmas Day, we all dutifully gathered around the TV to watch the Queens Christmas Address.Huh?

According to my husband and his family (and some other Brits I've discussed this with), it is very working-class and tacky to follow the Royal family or to be interested in their news. It is better and more upper-class to show an indifference to it all.  Most feel the monarchy should be done away with completely and they roll their eyes at all the hoopla. They don't get why we outsiders (me) find it all so interesting and wonderful. I've pretty much learned to keep my opinions and wonderment to myself when it comes to such things.

I wouldn't mind planning a trip back to the UK for sometime this summer . . . hmmmmmm, I wonder when they'll announce a wedding date!!

As for Stonehenge, I know!!! I so want to see it and I've requested time and time again to go. It is only about an hour's drive so I thought it would be nice to invite to in-laws along and that is when all the "it's only a bunch of rocks" came into play. They totally disregarded my desire to see one of the Seven Wonders of the World and just laughed at me. I was soooo annoyed!

One of these days I will see it. One of DH's best friends is into megalithic formations and such (is that what they are properly called? I'm not sure) - and has gone on "hunts" all over the area to find and photograph them. He knows them all so well, in fact, that one little known formation is actually in some lady's back-garden and our friend has gotten to know her and simply calls her up and says he's coming over to look at the rocks - and she leaves the gate open for him!

oh - and to combine the distaste for royalty AND history, while making fun of my request to see Stonehenge, my FIL said "Well, we can never take you back to France then . . . all you'll want to do is go to the palaces and run about like a tourist."

    UGH!

I'm sorry - I did not grow up a stone's throw away from a French palace. I'm not used to that sort of thing and it is a type of hands-on history lesson that we don't get in the States. I want to see pretty golden palaces and I don't appreciate being talked down to because of it!

  • Hah - I love it all Raz!!  So interesting :-)

  • Do you think they'll televise it like Diana and Charles' wedding? Cuz if so, I am so there with a huge bucket of popcorn!

I have always loved Diana and really liked Prince William. I think this is great!

  • I have heard the same lower class/upper class attitudes regarding Royal News in England...  I think the William/Kate China to celebrate the event is SOOOOO cheesy and I can only imagine it being something that lower/middle class people would buy to allow them to feel like they've reached the upper crust of the society.

I will watch the wedding if it's televised, however...  :)

Same here - all the while getting major side-eye from DH. Oh well, he's used to it - he gets super embarassed that I read the Daily Mail's headlines too! I know it is trash, but it is entertaining trash! :D

He must think he really slipped down the social ladder by marrying me!

Daily Mail = New York Post...  at least on the trashiness scale!
