John Travolta and Kelly Preston are having a "silent" birth.
Re: John Travolta and Kelly Preston are having a "silent" birth.
I saw this yesterday and was a little floored. Seriously? I'm OK with the no noise during labor [not the no drugs part though], but not talking to your own child? No way.
my bookshelf!
Bloggy
I'm actually much more weirded out by the silent birth than the not talking to the baby part. Newborns certainly thrive on physical contact, but I don't think a baby in the first 7 days is going to be hurt by not being spoken to. I think it would be much harder on the family and anyone else who visits than on the baby since to me it seems instinctive for people looking at a sweet little baby to want to talk to and coo at it.
As someone who has had a med-free birth, I think expecting a woman to do that and also not make any noise is absolutely insane. Really, it would be insane to expect a woman giving birth with an epidural not to make any noise, either.
I was thinking about this more and agree. I mean, no noise? At all? Does that mean you can't breathe loudly through your contractions? Your spouse can't encourage you through the pain? No music to help calm you down? I'm curious as to how this actually works and if women are successful with it.
One of my FB friends was talking about this and she posted this link
http://www.scientologynews.org/faq/what-is-silent-birth.html
which basically says that the mom can make all the noise she wants, it is just the attendants who can't make any noise. Like none of the "PUSH. 1. 2. 3...10" crap they do. That I am all for.
Now, this not talking to the baby business, I searched that site a little to see what that is about but didin't see anything. That part makes me sad, especially since the baby has been hearing mamas voice the whole time he/she was inside and now silence.
