oh - and I feel silly starting a new thread for this - but I thought you'd be interested in these:

They are pictures of my MIL's mother's house in France (Senlis) - it is an OLD house in the center of an even older walled city just north of Paris. I guess the house is 400-500 years old and the cellars used to link to a tunnel system to get into Paris! Pretty cool stuff.
I've never been to the house and now that it's up for sale, it's not likely I will ever get the chance - but I love looking at the pictures and trying to do research on it. The ILs probably think I'm nuts!
I thought you'd enjoy the pics too!
ohmygosh how neat!!!!!!!! Wow. Imagine the stories those walls would tell if they could talk!!!
There are different prices on those sites. Hmm. And WOW at the price tag!
Thank you for sharing!! :-)
Yeah, I've noticed the difference prices too - but I think the correct one is the 990k as that is what a 3rd listing has (which is saved on my home computer - but shows the front hall and cool stone staircase - very French). I wish I could find out more about the history - but asking my MIL is like pulling teeth. She hates the house and all memories associated with it.
I guess the Nazis took it over in WWII and DH's gran was forced to cook for them while they stayed in her house. From what I've heard, she was a pretty tough lady!
The family also had a house in Chantilly (which was literally a walk through the woods to the palace). The mayor of the town used to rent it and he completely trashed it so they ended up selling it rather than make simple repairs.
Plus, they had apartment on the Left Bank in Paris too, that was - supposedly - in the same building as Hemmingway's apartment. MIL says that her parents bought it for her and her sister when they went to University (Sorbonne) but they really bought it for themselves to use. For whatever reason, this makes MIL really upset (?? why - she had FREE housing in Paris!). But again, rather than deal with the minimal upkeep, she sold it super cheap in the 90s.
DH is still pretty upset about both sales and I would be too - it was like they were just willy-nilly selling off their family history! But MIL hates talking about or dealing with anything related to her French family, so what can ya do? I find it all frustratingly fascinating.
Wow wow wow wow wow wow!!! Amaaaaaazing history!! Wow!!!
Have you ever read Sarah's Key? It's about the famous roundup of Jewish people in Paris in 1942 and the histories of a few families that become intertwined. Parisians would rather forget it happened but its existence in history is undeniable! It's a haunting but fascinating book.

oooh - that book looks really interesting! I'm going to put it on my list - thanks!
