Maybe I am Crazy

It's slow, so I figured I could get your opinions on something.

Would you want to attend a wedding in August in a building with no A/C in Maryland?  Maryland is pretty hot and humid, but it will be in the evening and there will be industrial fans.

Someone posted it on my local, and I'm not trying to call anyone out but I was surprised that I was the only person who didn't think it would be ok (and I said that it COULD be ok, but I would try to hear from other people who have been there at that time of year). I don't want to say anything because it's a drama-free local board, and I'm also feeling like I may be the only one who feels this way, so her guests may be totally fine.

Maybe it's because I sweat a lot and hate the heat (and humidity), but it's not a chance I would take unless I knew that it worked out well in the past.  The idea of attending a wedding without A/C, dressed up, is very uncomfortable to me. I am starting to think I hate the heat more than most people, or something - I consider it to still be gross around here in August, even in the evening.

Re: Maybe I am Crazy

  • Ok I totally think its not ok. I went to a wedding in Hilton Head this past summer and they had half of the room open and fans running everywhere. I felt so bad for the people who were near the fans because they were so loud. It was sooooo hot even at night. Everyone looked all sweaty in pictures, it was not cute.
  • Definitely not. After last summer, I definitely wouldn't want to go anywhere in August without a/c.

ETA: Then again its not like the month determines the weather. One of my friends got married on 6/7/08 and it was unbearably hot and humid. But still, knowing how humid MD can get, I wouldn't chance it.

  • We are in Michigan, and I would assume that thier weather is much like ours, if not a little warmer since they are a little further south. We specifically planned our wedding for September b/c it had a better chance to be cooler and therefore prevent Hubby from sweating his arse off during the entire day. We ended up with a sorta windy day in the 60s and he STILL had sweat running off his face during the ceremony (the sanctuary WAS a little warm and some of it could have been nerves) but I don't think I would risk anything like that in August without A/C myself. Not my cup of tea.

  • I'm with you, Laura.  You're not crazy!  I also hate the heat and humidity and wouldn't have a good time at all being dressed up for a hot, humid, sticky wedding.  This is one of the reasons I did NOT have my wedding in the summer!  Of course, you can't really predict HOW hot it will be ON THE DAY of the wedding this early in the game, so maybe it will be ok, especially with the fans and the cooler evening air.  I don't blame you for questioning it, but I also think Maryland is still one of those states that could go either way with the heat - I don't doubt it can become oppressive in the summer, but it WAS one of the states that got nailed by snowmageddon last winter too.  I don't think it's completely unreasonable for the wedding to be planned without AC - but maybe the bride should make sure she has a few extra fans or even a couple AC window units on hand just in case?

  • Ok you guys make me feel better.

Like LTB said, the weather around here is unpredictable.  We knew we were sort of taking a risk even with September, though we chose it because it was the earliest we thought we could get away with and still have it be cool.  Then, this summer was SO hot that we were getting really nervous, and it cooled of literally days before the wedding (thank goodness).

Even then, it was only a 15-20 minute ceremony that I was worried about, so I kept telling myself it would be ok.  I wouldn't have chanced having the whole wedding outside/without AC until even later (though I suppose then I would have worried about it being too cold outdoors). I feel like the fans will be loud and it will still probably be hot.

Again, I'm not going to say anything more, since I already said my 2 cents, but I feel less crazy now.

  • City - you are completely right, it could be fine (which is one of the reasons I am not saying anything else to the OP).  I think I am too paranoid about the what-if's, which is why I couldn't have an outdoor wedding, and only had an outdoor ceremony because there was a very good backup plan built-in at my venue.

Still, I'm not going to lie - if I was going to attend this girl's wedding, and then it wound up being more than, say, 85 degrees (like it was many days this past summer), I would most likely leave right after the ceremony or even not go at all, despite knowing that the bride would have to eat the cost of my plate. Of course, if I went and the fans were doing the trick I would stay, but receptions get hot in normal venues with all the body heat and the dancing.

That's probably really flameful, but I feel like it's a risk you take planning a wedding without A/C in the summer.

  • Well here in Texas people love to have summer weddings (98-112 degrees) and the whole wedding is completely outdoors. Summer is like the busiest wedding time here. I think it's crazy!! At my brothers wedding it was about 95 the whole ceremony and reception (outdoors). I was sweating like a little piglet.

  • Is it the ceremony only or the reception too?  I can see doing the ceremony with no A/C.  I have been to two weddings in PA in August with no A/C.  It was a bit uncomfortable, but a lot of older churches don't have A/C.  I don't see that as any different than an outdoor ceremony.

No lie, I would RSVP 'no' unless it was a close relative.  It's a dry heat (at least where I lived in TX) but that just means you can get from your car to the nearest building without sweating, it's not something you can sit in.  Mercy. People DIE just walking around outside in the summer, so forget dancing.  I could barely spend a few hours at 6 Flags, and that's in tiny shorts and a tank top, going on water rides when I can't take the heat anymore, not caring about my hair or makeup in pictures.

Both, I think.  I think ceremony only would be ok, since it's short (usually).  It's not in a church, it's at an art museum.

  • You're not crazy.  I would be miserable if I attended a wedding in the summer with no A/C.  Did anyone mention the possibility of older guests though?  If they've got grandparents coming, that could be bad.  I know DH's grandmother would have passed out if it was too hot/humid.  She's not in the best of health to begin with, but it's still something the bride should be taking into consideration.  And, does she plan to provide water bottles to guests to (try) to keep them comfortable, if the temps climb?

You should send her to E.

  • Definitely not crazy. I was worried about my September wedding in GA and the heat. Luckily, it wasn't bad and it was all indoors minus a few pictures at the reception site.

I sweat way too easily and knew there was no way I could do a summer wedding even in the AC. The humidity is the killer and even with fans, in August, I couldn't imagine having a wedding. Hopefully, her day won't be insanely hot and guests will be comfortable.

  • I'm with the majority here. You are not crazy. I went to a wedding last July during a heat wave. It was an afternoon wedding and about 90 degrees and very humid. The reception had air conditioning, but it couldn't keep up. I was sweating just sitting there. The pictures came out with everyone's makeup melting off their face. It was horrible. DH wouldnt even dance because he was dripping with sweat.
