Tiff...breastfeeding and medicine question

I was going to email you, but I can't find your email address right now.

I have a bad cold and am starting to get ear infections.  Is there any medicine prescription or otc that I can take?

I am going to the doctor this afternoon b/c tylenol an sudafed isn't cutting it anymore.  I want to make sure if there is something I can take, that I have her prescribe it.

 TIA!

Re: Tiff...breastfeeding and medicine question

  • Your Dr. will probably prescribe you an antibiotic, just make sure you let them know you are breastfeeding.  I had to take antibiotics several times since I've been breastfeeding and I think most of them are okay.  I believe Penicillins are the safest, but I'm allergic to Penicillin, so I had to take other types of antibiotics.  Just make sure that you get yourself some acidophilus pills (OTC) and probiotic yogurt to avoid Thrush on your nipples.  It is extremely painful and is a pain in the butt to treat.  And it is very easy for Chase to get it in his mouth.  You will have to give him medicine and sterilize everything that touches his mouth or your nips...huge PITA!  I took the acidophilus pills 3x day, but that doesn't always prevent it either.  Your best bet, if your Dr. will prescribe it for you, is to get a prescription for Nystatin pills.  I would ask your Dr. upfront just to give you a prescription for it, just in case you get it.  My Dr. did this for me after I had Thrush several times.  Anyway, good luck!!!  Let us know how it goes.  Hope you feel better soon!!

  • sorry I wasn't home all day! What did the doc say? There is lots that you can take. More that you can than can't. I have the big book of meds for nursing moms, So if y'all ever need to know anything I can look it up for you.

Everything Gina said was correct, but also watch out for decongestants. if it has DM or D in the name think of it as standing for 'Dry you right up'! Let me know what you got and I'll look it up. Hope you feed better soon!

  • She said to take tylenol and mucinex dm, but if that's going to dry me up, should I take regular mucinex?
  • Yeah, I think I would avoid the DM and just stick with the regular Mucinex.
