Shoes on or off?

It's slow here.  I saw this on another board and wanted to know what you ladies think...

Do you wear shoes in your house?  If not, do you make guests take their shoes off at the door?  How do you feel about being asked to take shoes off in someone else's home?

Re: Shoes on or off?

  • My answer:

For the most part, I don't wear shoes in my house because it isn't comfortable.  If I am having people over, I will definitely have shoes on.

I would never make people take their shoes off at the door.  Some of our friends do because they see our shoes by the door, but they don't have to.

I hate being asked to take my shoes off at somebody else's house.  My company x-mas party is usually held at my boss's house.  They are a shoes off household.  They make everybody take there shoes off at the door.  It's awful because it is winter and it is cold.

  • In summer, I don't mind shoes on inside our house..and don't ask people to take off shoes..though 99% of our friends/family do anyways when they see we have a rug at our entry way.

In winter time, I would absolutely ask people to take them off, but again most of our friends/family do it anyways so it does not need to be vocalized.

We don't wear shoes in our house..we keep them i nthe garage

  • Because we have hard floors in all the 'common' areas of the house, it's anything goes here.

Personally I always take my shoes off and wear slippers around the house, and take off my slippers in the carpeted bedrooms.

We have two wicker baskets of shoes by the front door, and a shoe rack at the back door.

  • We take our shoes off, but do not require it of others. DH and I both grew up in "shoes off" houses, so it's just natural for us to take them off when we're home or go to someone else's house. Maybe this is a midwest thing (because we're so used to nasty shoes from the slush that hangs around for several months of the year) but people tend to take their shoes off at the door without being asked. When we have kids who have friends over, I will require shoes off, especially with boys because they almost always track a lot of dirt.

  • We don't have a rule one way or the other. I take my shoes off when we get in the house and put on my slippers because thats what is comfortable to me. DH does the same. Now that the weather is turning I like to have something on my feet cause our floors get cold, and I HATE cold feet!

We don't ask our guest to take there shoes off but it also doesn't really bother me when I go to a no shoes household

In my house growing up we had to take our shoes off in the fall and winter so we didn't track in leaves and mud. My dad would get so mad and we'd have to sweep all the floors. So as the lazy children we were we just took them off :)

  • We're shoes off people, and our guests usually take theirs off too when they see ours in the basket by the door.

Our old apartment had wood floors and we usually asked people to remove their shoes at the door. Cleaning up after dirty shoes was a PITA, especially in the winter.

  • We are a shoes off house, however in the summer if I am wearing flip flops sometimes I will keep them on.

I will agree with pp about it being regional.  Being from the midwest, I couldn't imagine NOT taking off my shoes in the winter.  The weather around here is so messy it just makes sense to take them off.  At that point, it just becomes a habit year round.

My guests generally take theirs off too.  I think it also depends on the season though.  If they are wearing flip flops in the summer, they can stay on.  But if they just walked through a foot of snow and have boots on, then they typically take them off.

  • DH and I are a shoes off house.  Both our parents' houses are also shoes off kinds of places.  We don't ever ask people to take their shoes off in our house, but all of our friends do.  We live in the Midwest, so I'll agree with some of the other girls that it's somewhat of a regional thing.

I also always take my shoes off when I'm in somebody else's house, probably just out of habit.  I'm just more comfortable without shoes.  Sometimes I even take them off in my classroom while I'm teaching!

  • We usually take our shoes off and put them in the closet.  We do not ask our guests to take their shoes off although we have wood floors so it is easy clean up.  We live in VA, not too much bad weather during the winter.  If we are having bad weather the shoes are taken off in the garage.

  • i'm usually a shoes off girl however with the weather changing.. i find it hard to get out of my uggs! even though they are not the most fashionable, they sure are warm... and i hate being cold!

i hate when people ask me to take my shoes off in their home.... if their house is cold my feet are usually freezing and i feel uncomfortable!

  • I think this can be a very controversial topic!

DH and I are both "shoes off" people.  We both grew up in "shoes off" households and actually we're both asian too, and I believe it is a cultural thing.  We have always taken shoes off either at the door or now we leave our shoes in the garage.  It is partially a comfort thing, but also a cleanliness thing.  If you think about where you shoes have been (in the dirt outside!), so you really want to bring that into your house?

I do have a friends who wear shoes in their houses, and we ask them to remove their shoes when they come into our house (again, it is a cleanliness thing).  We also have brand new hardwood floors and I don't really want them scratched by people's high heels either.  I feel bad sometimes asking people we don't know super well to do this, but I feel that it is our home and we have a right to ask people to comply by our rules when they come in. None of our friends mind as far as I know!

  • We sort of go back and forth.  I think we both usually have our shoes off when we're home, but not always.  And they don't come off right when we come through the door.  We don't ask others to take their shoes off.

We live in San Diego, so the weather is never bad here.  But even growing up in snowy, snowy upstate NY, I've never asked anyone to take their shoes off.  In general, if people had snowy shoes, they just took them off without anyone asking.

  • Generally, we do wear shoes in the apartment.  It's hardwood, so it's cold!  During the summers, I'm always in flip flops and in the winter, I've always got Uggs on.

We don't ask people to take their shoes off in our apartment.  And further, I'd be unbelievably offended if I was asked to at someone else's house.  I would comply once but I'd never be a guest in their home ever again.  Not sure how much dirt 1 or 2 people can actually track into a home...

Furthermore, we have a dog that goes outside to potty.  He tracks in dirt and grass.  So people with a shoes-off policy, yet have pets confuse me.

Living in Wisconsin, it gets nasty out here in winter time...so by having people take off shoes (which is a given around here..nobody would dare track in black snow/slush..i dont think i've ever actually asked someone, they just do it)..so in that case..ALOT of dirt is tracked in.  Even my dog is trained to stop at our patio door to get his paws wiped down in winter cuz the snow gets so incredibly gross around here.

Actually, it's pretty regional.  It gets gross around here in the winter, but that's generally why we keep all weather doormats at the door.    But if I'm wearing snow boots, yeah, I'll take them off.

I'm actually interested in knowing what would happen if someone refused to take their shoes off.  Would they be turned away?  I had a friend growing up who kept her shoes on from the moment she got dressed until it was time for bed.  Later came to find that she had problems with foot odor and wore shoes to mask it.

  • I should clarify that in the winter, it is just a given that after walking around in the slush you take your snow boots off at the door.  I do this in my house and others.  My guests tend to do the same thing.

PS.  I just wanted to post something to get us talking.  It has been pretty slow here.  Anyone have other random but controversial topics to discuss?

They wouldn't be turned away, but I would not let them into the carpeted areas of my house..but I definately wouldn't make them aware of that..whatever our plans are would have to revolve around kitchen/dining/1st floor where the flooring can be cleaned easily.

Good thing we aren't friends then!  I've never had anyone refuse to take their shoes off and I think I'd be offended that they think they are above the rules of our home.  Unless there is a medical reason they need to leave them on, I don't see why you would refuse to take them off.  I think it is really disrespectful to not follow other people's rules when you are a guest in their house.

Just for the record: we don't have pets and probably never would.  Good thing DH and I agree on this one!

PS:  I told you guys this can be controversial!
