Just off the Pill, Need Advice Please!

Okay, so i just came off the birth control pill Yaz because i did not like what it was doing to my body...however i have no interest in getting pregant.  My husband and I, married for just about 2 months want to wait at least 4 years before having children.  I was wondering if anyone using FAM has successfully used this method as a form of birth control for this amount of extended time.  other than each other, we have only discussed this method with a few other people all who have made the same old joke "people who use this end up being parents" line.  So please let me know your experiences on if FAM has been an effective form of BC and for how long it has worked.  THANKS!

Re: Just off the Pill, Need Advice Please!

  • Been using FAM for two years with no worries. People who make the jokes about it don't understand that it's not the rhythm method. Don't let them get you down.
  • You may want to post this on the "Getting Pregnant" board (even though you aren't trying to get pregnant). Alot of the ladies on there talk about this method.

  • If you scroll down the page you can see someone who posted about the Fertility Awareness Method and her good experiences with it. She would probably be a good person to ask about it.
  • Have you talked to your husband about your decision? We use FAM and my husband is so supportive of it (he was actually the one who didn't want me taking BC). This really helps with the timing of things.

We have been married for almost a year and everything has been going great. I really fought it for awhile-I thought it was ineffective, but I actually like it now. I like knowing what is going on with my body. The book I was recommended is Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. This will give you all the information you need to know and then some.

Many people will not understand your decision to do this, but I know it is what is best for us.  Good luck!

  • Over 3 and a half years and counting. We are happily childfree and never want kids. Ever. If you follow the rules it's just as effective as the pill. Don't let the people who say their friend/sister/cousin/aunt/ etc got pregnant while using FAM scare you away. Those who do get pregnant are either not following the rules, not following them strictly enough, or taking a calculated risk.

Check out the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility and their website. They have great info and helpful forums.

    Best of luck!

  • Sorry I don't know all the lingo, and I am very interested in coming off of my bc and I DO NOT want to be pregant.

    FAM?

  • I don't know anything about FAM, but if you're just interested in getting off of the hormones in birth control and know you're looking at 4 or more years, have you considered Mirena? My gyno told me 6 months ago that he screwed up and I never should have been on the pill. Mirena hurts like the worst cramps of your life X1000, but 5 years of super effective birth control and fewer/no periods. It kind of rocks.
