mattress reeks of cig smoke

DH has been storing the mattress from his old condo in his parents' finished basement for the past 3+ years.  We decided to set it up in my parents' guest room.  DH is a smoker & smoked inside of his old condo (I will not allow it in our house) and that bed still stinks beyond all belief after "airing out" for 3 years.  It's so bad that my parents hauled the bed into their basement.  Is there any way to get rid of the smell?  Would a zippered mattress enclosure on the bed & boxsprings block the smell?  It's a fairly expensive bed but at this point I'm ready to send it to Goodwill!

Re: mattress reeks of cig smoke

  • I doubt it. Smells will work their way through any fabric. You have to eliminate the smell before you cover it up.

If you really want to keep the mattress, my only suggestion is to have the mattress professionally cleaned. They'll completely clean the mattress (like having your carpets cleaned) in an attempt to remove the tar and chemicals that cause the smell.

  • My best guess is that you are SOL, sorry. Cigarette smoke permeates everything, and it is very hard to get rid of. A professional cleaning will probably help, but I'd be shocked if you ever got the smell completely out of it, I would just donate it to Goodwill, at least you'll get a tax write off.
  • If I were you, I'd sell it to a smoker! Seriously, then maybe he could get some money back, and they wouldn't notice the smell. I don't think you will ever get that smell out.  I doubt that would block the smell.
  • UGH!!  Plus the good protectors are not cheap.  He says he's going to quit in Jan.  Once his nose isn't full of chemicals I'm going to make him smell the stuipd mattress so he believes me.  That or kick him in the rear!

Good luck! My dad finally quit smoking 3 years ago after smoking 3 packs a day for over 20 years (luckily he was anti-smoking indoors, he'd go outside). He can't stand that smoke smell. He's just amazed at what he can smell now that he doesn't have that crap blocking his sinuses.

  • I would have it professionally cleaned, or do it yourself with a Rug Doctor and attachment for upholstery cleaning.Add some Lysol or Pinesol to the cleaning water, or white vinegar, if you are sensitive to smells. Let it dry completely, and put a zippered plastic cover on it.

Goodwill does not take used mattresses.

  • Did you see my post about sellling it to smoker? It's worth thinking about.

  • Maybe you can call a local ServPro or Servicemaster and tell them the situation. They specialize in cleaning after fires and water losses, so they might have an option for you. I know that after house fires, they will treat with ozone (there are greener options now too) and this might be an option, but maybe not the cheapest. Good luck.
