Skhynes -- an ear question

You're the ear expert, right?  I have waxy ears, and it turns out Ian does too. Even though I clean his ears regularly (in the tub with a washcloth and water, then with a safety swab) the pediatrician had to dig a bunch of wax out to get a look at his eardrums this week.  She went through about five curettes and the kid was pissed.

Any suggestions for helping with this?  I sometimes dip the swab in baby oil to soften it.

Re: Skhynes -- an ear question

  • I'll admit, I don't have much experience with children, especially as young as Ian, but here's what we tell adults.  Does he have tubes or any holes in his ear drums?  If not, you can use on one those blue bulb suction things and flush a little bit of tepid water in there maybe once a week, after using a softening agent.  They sell OTC softening agents (Debrox is the best) but I'm not sure if they are safe for a child his age.  Baby oil is fine, just put a couple of drops in there with a dropper or something.  At this point the swabs may be doing more harm than good by pushing the wax in further and impacting it.  Especially on a baby with such small ears.  There is no way to prevent earwax or slow the accumulation of it.

  • Thanks!  The pedi said they don't recommend Debrox before age 2.  She wasn't too concerned with it, but I suspect his ears itch because he sticks his fingers in there a lot.  Last night I used one of his bath toys to squirt water in to make it a game.
  • They had to do that to Ethan at his four month appt. He screamed much harder over that than he did over the actual shots. My ears are crazy waxy. I hate it.
