Minneapolis property taxes- vent

Anyone else live in the city?  Taxes are going up 17.2% for next year.   Angry

Sorry, yes it is Hennepin Co.  I should open up my venting area. . .

Re: Minneapolis property taxes- vent

  • Wow, my parents are going to be glad they just put their house on the market!  Their taxes are already over $36,000 a year.

  • I live in Bloomington - my taxes are going down 10.7%...  but my property value has decreased this year by about 30k.  Thankfully we bought our house seriously under market value, so we are still positive on our mortage price vs house value.

I hate that my property taxes are going down - because I know that when they go down, they also cut services.  I can afford to pay the taxes I am currently paying, so I wish to continue to pay those taxes, even if the city/county things I owe less.  Too bad it doesn't work that way.

City/County taxes are going up because of the budget fiasco that Governor Pawlenty has put us in... so as frustrating as it can be to see taxes increasing that much - send a big happy thank you card to TPaw.  His "no new (state) taxes" philosophy just means that the tax burden gets pushed down into county and city local taxes instead of being spread out over the entire state.  Hennepin County gets to take on more than their fair share of the tax burden thanks to TPaw's mess.

  • Ours (Dakota County) have stayed basically the same since we bought in December 2007. But, just this year, our property value went down 30K as well. So, maybe the taxes really did go up, but since keeps going down so much it's evening out? IDK, but everything house related is so frustrating! Our house is worth SO MUCH less than what we owe on it right now it makes me want to cry (I know this is quite the norm these days though).

  • We live in Minneapolis, while our property value went down our taxes went up by 10%!!!!  ARGH!  We thought it was a mistake and were goig to call the assessor's office but I guess it's no mistake.
  • I live in St. Paul but I can sympathize.  Our tax payment has remained mostly constant but the value of my house has dropped by half since I bought in 2006.  I am afraid to think about how high it could be for my teeny tiny little city house if the market hadn't crashed.

This. Cutting local government aid means that local governments need to raise property taxes to maintain essential services such as police and ambulence. Unfortunately, this is a regressive tax because you can be making less money (or even without a job), and you are paying more taxes. It's pretty crappy.  But TPaw can give himself a big pat on the back because he never signed a bill to raise taxes.

Lots of love and continual explosions of babydust to my BG Besties! XOXOXOXO

I wish everyone else understood this.  :(  TPaw & his policies (and the potential policies if Emmer wins -doubtful- the governorship) have put Minnesota into a nasty downhill spiral.

  • Yeah I think our property value went down around 10k but our taxes went up 2.3%. Not too terrible I guess.

  • Yup, I live in the city too, so ours are going up.  I of course blame T-Paw.  I will say, though, that overall property taxes in MN are still very low compared to other states.  I have friends in Ohio whose houses are worth half as much as mine and pay more in property taxes.
  • Angry Our taxes went up 4% and our home value went down 20k.

    I'm not happy. At all.

And to T-Paw... thanks for the downward spiral. It's going to get worse. And I know we will be paying for it in the next few years. You stink.

  • I was so mad when I opened the mail yesterday! I live in South Minneapolis and it just amazes me that they can go up that much!

I agree with all the comments about TPaw. DH said it was due to MY democratic mayor, I said no this is due to YOUR republican Governor. When he runs for President and uses his not raising taxes as a platform, I hope that all Minnesotans cry fowl and tell America what really happened in our state. Ugh!
