Car Repair Vent

So I went today to get my snow tires on my car for winter. No big deal, right? Well first they charge me $80 when I thought it was supposed to be free since I bought the tires there last year. Apparently, it doesn't count for this year. Whatever.

So my stepdad met me there and they didn't see him come in. They opened the door and asked me if I could come out and look at something. I motioned to my stepdad who got up and as soon as he started walking over 3 guys huddled together in the shop and started whispering.

Apparently, the break line randomly broke, right there parked in the shop. But "Luckily, it happened in the shop on not on the road, so let me get  you a quote to fix it today". Um, excuse me!? My stepdad said it's the oldest trick in the book. I guess you can jam on your breaks with both feet as hard as you can and the break line will pop.

So, we told the guy no way and we will fix it (my stepdad used to  fix our cars before he got cancer...he beat it...so he's getting back into cars)

As we are leaving they are telling us how we should get it fixed there so I remarked "Well what did you do jam on the breaks with both feet because it was fine before I came" to which the guy started telling me the RIGHT way to break and then I lost it and started telling him that I don't need a lesson on how to break, they do.

Ugh! So now I have no car. It's sitting in my driveway for triple A to come tow it to my parent's house tomorrow.

Sorry I had to vent...taking my car places is always so stressful. I'd like to think they won't screw me over but 75% there is always something new they find. Oh and by the way, I got my car completely inspected in August, car taken apart and everything to see if it was worth putting money into and only AC was an issue. Break lines were NOT noted.

Re: Car Repair Vent

  • :( Im sorry that happened. It can be sooo frustrating when you know someone is trying to take advantage of you. You did the right thing by not letting them fix it for you. In fact, you should make such a big stink out of it that they eventually give u those free snow tires!!

My husband and I are car fanatics, and I have actually raced my car before on a track! A lot of people think because I am a girl, I dont know anything about my car. I have gotten quotes on new CV joints from a dealer and they were trying to charge me 3x the amt. that it really costs to do. I laughed at them and left. I think they figured that I wouldn't know better and just pay it.

  • Bastards. I always bring my husband to things like this, even though I am the one with the mechanical knowledge in our family. (My dad was also an extremely good mechanic.) It's so unfair.

  • I go to one of the most expensive guys in town because he knows my family and would never cheat anyone... for me it's worth the peace of mind to pay more.  So sorry!
  • :(  That sucks.   Time to find a new shop!  I love my mechanic.  He's the dad of my youngest sister's best friend and he's as honest as the day is long.  I had to bring my car in because some dingbat hit my sideview mirror and it popped off (and they drove off which was even more special.  At least it didn't break).  I wasn't fully confident jamming it back on without ruining the motor mechanism so I brought it over -he didn't even charge me!  Love that guy.
  • It seems like every time I think I find a good guy I can only go to him like 4 times before I get ripped off. I actually like Firestone, but the usually are more expensive so I don't go.

  • I wish I knew more about cars.  I, too, feel like I'm getting taken advantage of when I go to mechanics, but I have no real way of proving it.

I hope you get your car back to normal soon!

  • I'm sorry, and I know how you feel.  One time I took my car to get fixed because everytime I would pump gas (fill it up), it would overflow.  Like the scensor in the gas tank was broke.  Whatev....  So I take it in and the guy says, "Oh I took it to the gas station pumped gas in it, filled it up, and it was fine....didn't overflow..."  Then he proceeded to tell me how to pump gas properly.  Angry  When I got in my car my gas gage was at the exact level it was when I dropped it off (almost empty) so I went back in and asked him if he pumped out the gas he put in and magically got it at the exact same level it was to begin with. He said yes, he pumped the gas back out.  "REALLY?!?!?!  DO YOU THINK I'M A MORON????"...Then a month later Toyota recalled all Toyota Celicas regarding gas tanks and replaced all gas tanks on Celicas.  Kiss my BOOTAH! Super Angry
