another Christmas gift question

What are you getting your dads or FIL's for Christmas? Or what are some gifts that really went over well?

My dad is SO hard to shop for. His only real "hobby" is golf, but he plays every weekend and over the past 20 years my family has literally gotten him every single golf related gadget or gift possible. Golf related gifts are out. Just to sweeten the whole scenario, his birthday is Jan. 3, so I really have to usually come up with TWO gifts for the man that's impossible to buy for.

Help? Stick out tongue

Re: another Christmas gift question

  • My FIL is getting a weather station.  DH bought it at Radio Shack.  Normally we get him a movie gift card.
  • um, you're looking at the girl with the father with NO hobbies. except for my mom. she is his hobby. he doesn't read. he doesn't play golf. he isn't in to sports. but, he has 1,345,678 bottles of cologne and aftershave because i never know what else to get him. he IS a huge wine lover, so i got him this book 1001 wines to try before you die, and i plan on getting him a bottle out of that book.

My FIL will be getting cigars or something. i leave that up to K to figure out.

  • I feel your pain!  My brother usually gets my dads and I get my moms and we say its from all of us.  We should probably get away from that because I'm married now.  But my brother knows what he likes a lot more then I do.  And we spend a good bit so its not usually cheap or anything.  My dads birthday is the Jan. 9th so its doubly hard on us to.

Anyways, my dad is into mountain biking, camping, guns, knives, and Harley's.  So we usually get him something in one of those genres.  That probably doesn't help to much though.  What about a nice jacket of some sort, lightweight or fleece or something.  Or a gift card to a nice restaurant (maybe for birthday?)

  • My dad is pretty easy, but it is the same thing every year, I bake him sugar cookies from the recipe that we've been making cookies from when I was little, and rum, my dad's favorite liquor.  FIL's are a little tougher... gift card for restaurant for one and something fishing related for the other.  It's the same every year, but it's all things that they like to get.

  • The best gift for a dad that I've heard of was a cooking class.  My friend has a hard time shopping for her dad too and she did this last year and he LOVED it.  He even asked for it again this year!  She just checked out some of the local culinary schools and found one that made food that she knew he liked, and signed them both up for it.  I think she printed the confirmation and wrapped it with some kind of kitchen gadget.

If your dad isn't afraid of the kitchen, I'm sure you can find a class on one of his favorite foods and he'd have a blast.  Everyone likes to eat, and it's a nice way to spend time with your dad.

  • My dad is currently resoring a 1948 Harley Davidson so I think I'm going to get him a couple books on motorcycle restoration. That's all I could think of :)
