lars bought me a Nook for my birthday so i'm looking for some recommendations! i've made my first purchase, The Help, but what else?
i've read all the Stieg Larssen books, all the Stephanie Plum books and all the John Sandford books.
please share your ideas on books you've loved! TIA!
Re: book recommendations?
The last books I've LOVED have been the Hunger Games Trilogy. They're technically YA fiction, but they're super good. Everyone I've had read them has loved them.
my read shelf:
I love my Nook! I use my swagbucks to get bn gift cards, because I was spending WAAAAAY too much on ebooks.
I can lend you a couple books for the Nook if you want, to get you started.
I've recently read the following:
Wench: A Novel
The Help
The Art of Racing in the Rain
Big Stone Gap
Devil in the White City
Water for Elephants
The Glass Castle
On my list to read:
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
Half Broke Horses
Freedom

I'm reading the first of the hunger games trilogy and liking it.
Yay for the nook! I love mine! (and I also always get gift cards from swagbucks)
Hah. I clicked on this to say The Help. I just finished it and loved it!!!
A couple others I've recently read and loved were Sarah's Key (heavy but excellent), and Weight of Silence.
I read a couple of books by Lisa Scottoline that I liked called Look Again and the other was Think Twice.
eta: A confession. I woke up at 8:00 on Saturday and stayed in bed reading The Help until 11:00 and then I fell asleep again for an hour so my butt got out of bed at NOON. I felt like I was in college all over again! :-)
I could not get into this one. Let me know if it's worth sticking it out to the end :-)
Devil In The White City is an excellent read. It's a bit heavy but the story is fascinating.
I'm reading the Outlander series right now. Love it, can't put it down!
I also like the Sookie Stackhouse series - books are way better than the television show.
On my bedside table for winter reading:
The Red Tent
Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain
The Heretic's Daughter
Love in the Time of Cholera
Under The Banner of Heaven
A Reliable Wife
Hotel on the Corner of Bitter & Sweet has been good so far. I'm only probably 30% into it, but it is good. I've heard nothing but good stuff about it.
I couldn't either! I tried a few times to start it, but it just was not working for me. Here is my list:
The Glass Castle
Still Alice, Lisa Genova
One Thousand White Women
The Shack
And here are two that are older, but 2 of my favs:
She's Come Undone, Wally Lamb
The Secret Life of Bees
My Bio
Married Bio
I forgot about this one....one of my absolute favorites!

Oooh yes, that was one good!
I read this this summer. I had a hard time getting into it, but the story is so sweet. You will enjoy it.

I love both She's Come Undone and I Know This Much Is True, but I HATED The Hour I First Believed.
That, and The Art of Racing In The Rain are probably the books I've hated the most in my life. Ever.
It made me sad because I was excited to see another book from Wally Lamb, since I loved his first two so much. I literally threw this one in the garbage.

I had trouble with this one as well. I didn't think it lived up to all the hype. Just an okay book, nothing special for me.
I havent been in a reading mood recently, but one of the last books I read was: Little Bee by Chris Cleave
I know SO many people who just LOVED this book, I personally thought it was over hyped but not a bad read in general.
Shadow of the Wind is one of my favorites.
To Kill a Mockingbird gets read at least once a year.
Loved the Red Tent.
Just am starting the Help and am only a few chapters in.
If you haven't read it, I really enjoyed the Poisonwood Bible.
My sister recommended Still Alice and Firefly Lane but I haven't picked them up yet.
I just finished the Red Knife which is a local author (forgetting his name now) and I enjoyed that.
My husband loves Vince Flynn and David Baldacci. I've now caught up on both authors and although government level crime isn't really my preferred genre, I've found both of them to be decent reads. I would read them in order though because they tend to have the same characters and the stories tend to build on eachother a little. It isn't a requirement like it would be for the Steig Larsson ones though
I also just read Leif Enger's recent Young, Strong, and Handsome. It wasn't as good as Peace like a River but not bad.
For a lighter read, I like anything by Carl Hiassen. Pretty wacky sense of humor on that guy but I will generally laugh out loud at least once at the outrageous scenarios that play out in his books. Skinny Dip is a good intro one.
Wow - I swear I have a life outside of reading!
Ditto the Hunger Games trilogy recommendation.
Do you like vampires? The whole Sookie Stackhouse series is entertaining (quick read), and you can probably find the pdfs online easily. Similar to the Stephanie Plum series- lots of quick read books.
I'm trying to start Girl with the Dragon Tattoo right now, but it's not too easy to get into I'm noticing. If you aren't already, try joining Good Reads. I think my bookshelf is in my sig; you can connect to everyone on facebook, etc and get ideas of what everyone else is reading.
Eat.Drink.BeMarried. Blog.
I just finished Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum. It took a few chapters to get into, but after that, it was very hard to put down. It is about a German woman in WWII and her daughter who is trying to understand why her mom is the way she is and how the war influenced both of their lives. I highly recommend it.
...If you are disturbed by graphic writing (both in describing the treatment of the Jewish people and depicting a relationship the woman has while in Germany) this book probably isn't for you.
Thanks for this post - I've added quite a few books to my list!
Dawn, I'd love to have you lend me a book or two. I read that you can old loan them for 14 days and I'm reading The Help right now so let me finish that up first. I think I have to add you by your email address?
did you know the follow up is out? Million Little Mistakes
I have to confess, the majority of my stuff is fluffy, light reads. I read so much for my master's and for school that I tend to flake out on pleasure reads.
Wow that's cool. When I hosted book club, that's the book I picked to read. I haven't read Million Little Mistakes yet.
Another vote for the Glass Castle here!
I don't do as much reading as I'd like to so I appreciate this post, too. Lots of great suggestions. Thank you!
William Kent Krueger. I've read almost all of his books and enjoyed them very much. I used to work with his brother.
