Mail call
So I got this envelope in the mail today from two friends of ours.
I thought, Wow - they're really on the ball with Christmas cards this year.
It wasn't a Christmas card. It was a thank you from their wedding.
Which was in August 2008.
Better late than never, of course. I've also gone to lots of weddings after which I never received thank you cards. Sigh.

I have never gotten a thank you card from any wedding I've ever been to and it really doesn't bother me. I've always been thanked in person the day of the wedding and honestly it's good enough for me.
Well, the TY card is for the gift, not just for attendance. Assuming that the couple don't open the gifts at the wedding in front of the guests, the TY is the confirmation and acknowledgment that they received the gift.

ringy, is there any good reason for the delay? Or are they just giant walking balls of fail when it comes to etiquette?

I have no idea. Maybe they just got busy and it slipped their minds. The wife graduated from med school, started her residency and took a bunch of med exams after the wedding. The husband wrote and defended his thesis. And they bought a townhouse and moved. But I mean, that's life right? And besides, we got a Christmas card from them last year, so I'm inclined to think that they had the time.
The only reason I can think of is that they were designing the cards... they had wedding photos on the front, and they also slipped in our photobooth pics into the card.
