I am currently driving a 2 door civic. It is my first car and it's been great. It has about 140,000 on it so still has a lot of miles left on it. We live out in the boonies and I would prefer to have something bigger preferably with 4 wheel drive just because the blind turns and being able to see better over banks etc. I've been watching for a CRV or Pilot. I could probably get 4,500 private sale (hopefully to my parents for my colleged aged sister).
FIL has access to a 2008 explorer (eddie bauer) that has 12,000 miles on it. They think we can get it around 15,000. It does about 1/2 as good on gas as the civic so it would probably cost me ~60-80 every 10 days or so.
The kicker...so the reason why it is such a great deal is it is part of an estate. The original owner had a heart attack and died in the vehicle which rolled down the drive way and hit a tree. They have repaired it at the dealership and it is in like new condition. Would you be ok driving a car someone died in?

The fact that someone died in it would not bother me at all, but the fact that it suffered some hefty damage would. Also, the fact that it's an Explorer would be a problem for me (I say that because I have one and it has not been a good experience).
I would have a very thorough inspection done (by a personal, trusted mechanic), and be sure to let them know it's been in an accident so they will know to pay close attention to certain things.
DH and I bought a new (used) car about 3 weeks ago, getting ready for the baby, and we had 4 cars inspected before we found one that we were pleased with. The others had been in some minor accidents (and been repaired), but the damage was still pretty bad on the inside, and would have caused some long-term problems. Be careful!
