S.O.S. and thank god my puppy is cute....

And I will say it again. Thank god my puppy is cute... like really frigging cute.

See above cuteness.

He peed into the air vent. Not around it or next to it. Into it!!! So now when I turn the heat on... well, you can imagine.

I've tried everything. Swiffered it, put dryer sheets under the vents, even today using white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and squirting it down there. My house smells like french fries and puppy pee.

Does anyone have any ideas how to make it stop? It's getting colder and I need to use the heat but I don't want my house to smell. I've been burning candles while we have the heat on but that gets pricey after a while and we can't burn them when we aren't home.

HELP!

Re: S.O.S. and thank god my puppy is cute....

  • Everything you've tried will only mask the scent for a short time. You need an enzyme cleaner. Only an enzyme cleaner can actually eliminate the scent (which you'll want to do anyway so he doesn't continue marking there - if he can smell it, he'll think it's ok to pee there).

I suggest Nature's Miracle (Petsmart and Petco both carry it). Take the grate off of the vent and spray it into the duct work. Grab a blacklight (or a blacklight bulb) while you're out - I've seen them at Lowe's, Home Depot, and Target. Pet urine glows like nuclear waste under a black light. Shine the light around the vent... odds are good that he didn't have stellar aim and there are probably some pee spots around the vent on the wall and floor as well. Spray the NM on them and let it dry (it has to dry for it to break down the smell, so don't blot it up).

Oh, and OMG the cuteness! He's adorable.

  • Thank you thank you thank you! Thats the best answer I've heard! My mom told me to call whatever kind of specialist works on heating and cooling and have them come rip out and replace the vents... I wan't about to do that.

And thank you. :) I look at him at least 5 times a day and say 'You're really lucky you're this cute or you'd be dead by now.' Hes more destructive than any other dog I've ever had.... but he smiles ALL the time. Irresistable. Then I snuggle him and we're all good.

And congrats on your up coming LO!

Not a problem! At least the puppy stage only lasts a short time so the destruction should end soon. If you need any other advice down the road (food, training, etc) you can post over on the Pets board too. Those girls are very knowlegable.

  • I second the Nature's Miracle.  It cleans up all things puppy.  I've used it many times on my dog's smelly messes.
