chicago to dallas.....

My husband and I are relocating to the Dallas area and neither of us have ever been there (yikes!).  He will be working in Irving, but we are in desperate need of info about the area.  I've heard Uptown, Addison, Highland Park and West Village are good places to look for apartments/maybe a first home.  We are mid-twenty newlyweds with 2 four-legged babies & are looking for a neighborhood with young couples & professionals, children not in the immediate future.  Any input? Oh, yeah.  And we're moving in like a month... it's time for me to get cracking!

Re: chicago to dallas.....

  • We relocated from Austin 3 months ago and I was in the same shoes as you are!

I don't know what range you are wanting to stay within. That could play a factor.

There are a few nice apt complexes very modern and hip in Las Colinas area of Irving, it's a little pricey (but I guess if you come from Chicago that's not too bad).

I have seen these apt personally and they are really nice:

Uptown has lots of apt high rises, a friend of ours just moved into one, it's really cool and hip, all young couples and young professionals. I would think the commute would not be so pleasant however.

We couldn't afford Highland Park or West Village, really nice areas great shopping/dining, but it was over our price range.

  • We just bought our first home in Highland Park - there are a ton of apartments, condos, etc for rent in our area. You can get them for a steal too because so many are up for rent. I love our neighborhood. Most people have dogs instead of children - there are several dog parks, stations for poop pick up, and everyone is just generally understanding that your dog is like your child. I highly recommend Uptown/Oaklawn/HighlandPark/West Village. It would be about a 15 minute commute to Irving, but at least he'd be going against traffic each time.

My DH is from Chicago - winter here is so much better. You're going to love it.

  • When we moved here from AL, we used an apartment locator company to find an apt.  They are paid by the apt. complexes, so it's a free service to you.

The winter weather is going to be nothing here for you compared to Chicago!  The summer is another story...

    Good luck!

  • Hi!

We just moved here this summer from Baltimore.  The weather is fantastic!  We bought a home in Lewisville a suburb between Fort Worth and Dallas.

There are tons of places to go shopping!  Good luck!

  • Hi Katie! An early welcome is upon you. I actually live in Ft. Worth. But I've lived in Arlington and I was born and raised in Dallas. Those are all nice areas. If he's working in Irving. There's an area called Las Colinas (which is an area; not a city but where the Cowboys training center is; but it is actually in the city of Irving) and has a lot of nice apartments and eateries and stuff. Close to DFW airport and the other side of things.

     Good Luck!

  • I love Chicago...but love Dallas too! You'll love it! We live in the M Street/Lakewood area of Dallas. It's older homes with tons of character, but still in the city and close to everything. The neighborhood is wonderful, with lots of young families and pets always walking around. It will just depend on your price range, but there are great options out there. Irving is centrally located, so you have a variety of areas you could live.

My husband is a realtor and can really help you with your search. He's so knowledgeable about Dallas areas and is really honest about what areas are best for each person. He would love to help you! Let me know if you have any questions.

Edit: I would suggest maybe renting at first to just get a feel for Dallas and see what areas you like best. MH can help you find a lease, not just a home to buy!

  • I moved to Dallas two years ago from the Northeast, and I am (pleasantly) surprised that I like it as much as I do! We have 3 kids, but I agree with a previous poster that renting first is probably a good idea. Highland Park is great; upscale and hip. I'm in far north Dallas which is as suburban as it gets.

Good luck and hope the move goes without a hitch!

  • Thanks for all the info ladies :)

We pretty much agree with what a few of you said and decided to rent for a while before we buy a home.  I get to visit early next month so I think I will be able to get a better feel for the neighborhoods out there.

    Wish us luck!
