Posting referral codes?

A few posts below got me thinking - do you mind if people post links with their personal referral code for a website?  For some reason it kind of bugs me.

I'm cool with posting of great deals if people will benefit from them...but I'm bugged when people post stuff just to push their own agenda of getting bonuses from referrals.  I guess there is no good way to know someone's true motives yet it still kind of bothers me.

Thoughts?

Re: Posting referral codes?

  • I think in certain settings it's fine and with full disclosure - not sure about the Nest. The door is slammed shut pretty fast on vendors and/or people trying to see stuff or earn money around here. Maybe it's better handled in a PM or email?  not sure....

I know the posters below aren't vendors and I am sure they don't mean any ill will with it. I think it would be different if you needed a referral code for those sites - but you don't. Anyone can sign up. I signed up for Living Social, Groupon and Crowd Cut all by myself.

I'm sure you're right about the bold.  I guess I just don't want this board to become post after post of people spamming for referrals.

I know the one time I did something where I needed referral codes (getting  a free iPod way back when) I posted random stuff on the Knot.  :-)  So it's totally hypocritical of me to be bugged by this...

Maybe I'm crabby and need chocolate.  Yes....chocolate would help :-)

  • Posting two right in a row is kind of annoying, but I don't mind it if someone starts a post and then someone else responds and says "here's my referral code if you want it."

    That I can handle.

And for the record, chocolate DOES help crabbiness :-)

  • Hmmm.  Obviously they do not bother me, but, I have benefited from them being posted here and I think most posters make it clear in the title what they are posting.  You can tell what it is and can pass it by if you are not interested? no harm done.

I don?t see many on here; it is not like the board is being over run by multiple posts about $20 for $10 burger joint coupons.

I guess I don?t think people are abusing the posts of PSA?s or deals.  I can totally see how it could become abused which will be sad because everyone will be discouraged from posting anything similar and I have found some truly great things off of these posts.

As for referral codes ? if the posts are not being abused, what is the harm in having the referral codes attached?  The company is willing to give away deals or deal dollars for referrals so what is the harm in capitalizing on them when you are able?

  • I posted my referral link with the nordstrom thing cause I figure heck, if you're signing up for the first time, why shouldn't someone benefit?  I also made it clear that the link I was posting was my referral link.  I rarely ever do this and it doesn't bother me if a regular nestie does it.  For non-regulars I think it's not appropriate.

I have clicked plenty of nestie's referral links (and will continue do so) and I was happy to see that at least someone benefitted my signing up for something.

  • Obviously it's fine.  They have a whole board dedicated to coupon codes, so there are definitely people who appreciate it.  I can see how some people would be annoyed though if more and more people started posting them and it kind of flooded the board.

I feel the same way about people asking us to vote for their babies in a photo contest.  Once (from someone who at least occasionally posts other things) is totally cool.  But if it started getting excessive it could get annoying.

Ugh.  Yes, that can get REALLY annoying.  I've hidden people on Facebook for that reason alone.  If people get especially obnoxious about it I actually get turned off and go vote for a different baby.  Surprise

  • It totally bugs me. If you tell me, hey, I get a bonus if you use my code! I'm cool with it, but to just be like "hey, here's a link, if you want it!" and not tell anyone you're benefiting from it, it's kind of sketchy in nature (posting for personal gain). IMO anyway.

  • I agree that it's annoying -- and also, if you sign up for those sites, you get their emails every day.  Do we really need a post every day for Groupon, Living Social, Crowd Cut, etc?

As for the other stuff, also annoying.  Especially the links in signatures where people aren't "saying" it, but it's there every post for people to magically stumble upon.  Anything from photographers to Mary Kay.

....however, I had to do a little of this when I was in need of haircut models.  I debated it, but I was totally desperate.  And my only benefit was not failing my training session :-)
