DH and I are going to visit his friends in Dec. who just had a baby in early Oct. By then she will only be just over 2 months or so. As new parents, his friends B&J will probably be quite tired, and the baby will require a lot of care.
What is an appropriate gift to take for them? I was thinking of food since they might not have much time/energy for shopping. Fresh fruit? Frozen meals (it would have to be store bought because we won't be able to cook while visiting them)? We'll pick something out for the baby as well.
What is a reasonable amount of time for us to visit? 1 hour? Less? We're not super close or anything so I'm worried they're going to feel like they have to "entertain" us and do a lot of cleaning and stuff before we get there. I'd be more than happy to cook or clean for them but since we're not very close, I don't think she'd be comfortable with that, not to mention I'd be asking her every second where everything was.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on what kind of visitor gesture, gift, or action was helpful, and what wasn't. Other tips are welcome, too!
Thanks!
Re: Q for moms: baby-visiting etiquette
Awww, the mear fact that you are asking this question is awesome!
Food is always always always appreciated. I received a home made casserole, with all the fixings for a wonderful salad, and baked cookies. It was honestly, the best I could have asked for. Fresh fruit platter is an awesome idea too. We actually brought that over to a friend's house after they had their baby, and they were so appreciative.
Also, if you ever want ideas for a group gift - a cleaning person for a day is AWESOME. Holy smokes.
As for staying? I think an hour is totally justified. By the second month, baby may still be fussy and not sleeping the greatest. A gift for the baby is also really sweet and I'm sure appreciated, but I totally would go the food/tlc route.
HTH!

Ditto on the other girls on how sweet/thoughtful you are! And ditto on the food too! I used to think that I wouldn't want food because I'm so picky about what I want to eat/etc and I could just have MH go get it, but after I gave birth, I would be so thankful if anyone brought over food because I wanted MH around to help with other stuff around the house instead of grocery shopping/running around getting food all the time.
Yeah, and if you get something (if possible, other than clothes, blankets, bibs--for some reason EVERYONE always gives us those things so we ended up having too much!) for the baby, I'm sure they'll really appreciate it too
Personally, I wish I got more board books at the time cuz I got none and I ended up buying a dozen on my own!
