is that tacky? you can't buy gift cards with groupons. but I keep seeing groupons for stores that family/friends shop at and thought too bad I couldn't get them a $50 gc for only $25. I could give them the groupon. but then there are the expiration dates.
::hangs head in shame that I even considered the idea::
Re: groupons as gifts?
I think if the person is groupon-savvy it is probably ok. Or as long as it is a place they will shop frequently. I think if you normally spend $50 on someone and get a $50 groupon for $25 you probably should still spend another $25...because they will know exactly how much you spent right? The other thing is, even though there are expiry dates, if the groupon expires, it becomes worth the original cost, not $0. So if you spent $25 for a $50 groupon and it expires, then it is still worth $25...
So I don't know. I think it depends. I bought groupons to get gifts for people at stores they like. I bought two of the Body Shop ones and got tons of stuff for my sisters-in-law at half price (but they won't know that it was half price that way...get my drift).
I've done this too! If someone gave me one for a store I liked or a spa I wouldn't be offended at all. I am sure it won't be too long before you can actually buy gift cards through them.
Ok, I guess I don't feel so bad about it. One I saw was for Cold Water Creek and I know my nurse at work likes that store, and I thought about getting her one. Then I saw one the other day for Nordstrom Rack, which MIL loves. I don't know that either is familiar with Groupons though, so I may not do it for them, but maybe for my sister etc.
Also, I didn't know that they just revert to their purchase value after the expiration date. Good to know.
I see nothing wrong with getting someone gifts at half price like you girls did! Thats savvy saving! Hee hee.

If you look under their "FAQ":
What happens if my Groupon expires?
All is not lost! Once a Groupon reaches its expiration date, it loses its promotional value, but you can still redeem it at the price you paid for the length of time stated by gift certificate laws in your state.
