S/O holiday plans... your thanksgiving plans?

hi all!

realized that TG is upon us NEXT week. my work is celebrating TG this week.

sooo.. what are the hi nesties doing this year for TG?

we usually go to vegas for TG because MH's aunties and uncles are there. but since we have travel restrictions this year, we'll be staying at my folks place locally (20 minutes away).

i usually bring some kind of dish, but most likely won't this year unless we buy something.

toys r us is open on TG at 10 pm, and i'm half tempted to check it out! hahaha

i just saw that the charlie brown TG special is airing this thursday, so i can't wait to watch it!

Re: S/O holiday plans... your thanksgiving plans?

  • my work is celebrating this week too! we're having a huge thanksgiving potluck tomorrow. just finished potatoes and cranberries :) mmmm.

i'm actually really glad we're doing it at work this year because DH and i will be on our honeymoon in st. lucia next week! so i'm not sure if there will be a  thanksgiving feast at the resort (that'd be awesome, i've never had gourmet fancy schmancy turkey day).

normally we head to ohio to spend time with DH's grandfather/irish family.

  • Funny....I was just going to post something like this!

My ILs are flying in from CA, like they have the past two years.  But this year (just today, in fact!) I made the decision to cater everything except the turkey and the pie.  I love cooking, and especially love Thanksgiving cooking.  However, I have my little guy this year, and I'd rather spend my day off with him than cooking.  Besides, while I adore my ILs, and they are the sweetest people ever, they can be very fussy, and sometimes cooking with them around (in our small kitchen) can be stressful ("Can we help?  What can we do?  Is this okay?  Do you like them cut like this?  Is this enough?  Do you need more?   What can we do?  What can we do?  What can we do?" It's sweet, but often exactly the opposite of helpful.  Giving me space would be the most helpful!)  Anyway, both they and MH have encouraged me to consider catering this year, so today I ordered a side-dish package from Whole Foods.  It'll be easy and less stressful for everyone.  I'll just make the pie the day before, and turkey's easy!  :)

  • It will be our first Thanksgiving in Boise, and MH first Thanksgiving without his family :( But his mom is coming to visit and will be here! So we are looking forward to that!

I'll also be trying out a new Pumpkin Pie recipe this year :)

  • We'll be on a plane to Hawaii Paradise

  • Our plans are still up in the air but we have canceled out visiting the IL's in MN since we'll see them at Christmas. We might have dinner with another couple who have no family in town, or go up to Vancouver to see my family (although it's not TG there). If we end up spending it with the other couple with no family here, I know they will want to host us and do all the cooking. I love to cook and menu plan so I really wish we could host instead, but they love hosting, live in a big house, and all their kitchenware matches. Maybe next year...
  • My work is celebrating this week as well.  We're having a big potluck on Friday - I'm trying out a new cookie recipe for pumpkin/chocolate-chip cookies.  I can't wait!

On actual Thanksgiving, we decided to head to Brugge, Belgium and spend the four-day weekend there.  Not very traditional but we are both far away from family, so why not?  We'll be having beer and chocolate this Thanksgiving. Smile

  • It's only me and J this year, so we're keeping it pretty low-key.  He doesn't really like traditional Thanksgiving foods (he loves mashed potatoes, dinner rolls and cranberries... the rest, he doesn't care about) and last year when I made the turkey it turned out terrible!  So this year I'm taking a break and going in a totally different direction.  We'll be having lasagna with focaccia bread and an applie pie for dessert.  The pie doesn't really fit the menu, but I canned the apple filling over the summer and I really want to try it out!

    TOTALLY jealous!!!! :)

We always host TG at our house and I cook a yummy TG feast for us, my SD, BIL, SIL and their kids.  It's fun :)  This year being PG, I have never looked more forward to TG in my life!!!  All the yummy food I get to devour and sit there in my maternity pants and feel totally comfortable...awesome! ;)

  • ooh you're so lucky mauibride!!!

It's our first TG as a married couple, and thanks to my job (food industry, yay) I can't get any time off around the holidays so we are staying here, which is not bad. The only bad thing is that we are open on TG, and the schedule comes out on Saturdays, so I won't know until this weekend if I am working or not! DH's extended family does a huge dinner out in Kaneohe and I really want to go to be a part of it and meet more people from his family, although I am also nervous! I feel like I should get a "free pass" on bringing any food since I bake all day at work, but it looks like I have to bring something.

I almost wish I have to work on TG so I can use it as leverage to get Christmas off... hmmmm....

  • We already had Thanksgiving up here in Canada.  It was delicious and lots of fun with the family.  I am a little jealous about all the black Friday deals you guys have..... we dont have anything like that.  Is anyone going out shopping on Friday or is it too crazy?

For me it's WAY to crazy to get up on your day off to stand in line in the cold at 3:30 am!  BUT I might this year as there is one deal in particular I'm trying to get so we will see.  I'm trying to see if they carry the same deal on Cyber Monday, if so that's the route I would rather go ;)  I'm on online holiday shopper for sure!

DH and I always do shopping on Black Friday. Two years ago I raced a man to the last big screen tv left and laid on top of it to guard it until DH arrived! The guys aren't too bad it's the b!tchy women you have to look out for.

Because we do Black Friday shopping we don't stray too far from home. We travel for Christmas so TG is our time to relax at home. FIL lives nearby and is a vegetarian so traditionally we go to his house for a Mexican TG with cheese enchiladas and margaritas! Big Smile

I recommend using tips from epicurious.com for your turkey.  Specifically, they give some tips on how to prep the turkey so that it will be moist.  And say doing 2 or more of the strategies is an idea too.

What I usually do is 2 of the strategies:  I brine my turkey, and I give it a butter rub, especially butter underneath the skin on the breast.  And cover the breast with aluminum foil for most of the cooking time, because it's done faster than the rest of the chicken, so it evens things out.  I've done this more than 4 times making turkey, and everytime it came out great.

Anyway, everything I just said they tell how in www.epicurious.com, which I love.

This year, I am making a turkey again for the first time since my first marriage ended, so I am super happy about that.  In the interim years, it would just be James and I or dinner at a friend's house, so when it was the 2 of us, I would buy just the turkey breast.  But it just didn't taste as yummy.  This year friends who don't have family in town will be coming over.  My one friend is an absolutely amazing dessert chef, so she will be bringing one of the desserts.  Yum!

Alyson, your apple pie sounds amazing!  How do you can?  this year I want to learn how to jam and give some as Christmas gifts.

And my church is having a Thanksgiving dinner the nite before, and I'm bringing my homemade stuffing and cranberry sauce.  I'm so looking forward to next week!

    : )

  • We're headed to Las Vegas to visit my hubby's dad and stepmom. They've not met LO yet, so that'll be exciting. I am a little hesitant...there's no love lost between me and my FIL...in fact I've not see him or SMIL for 6 years and that was a 45 minute breakfast in a very crowded restaurant. Before that, it had been 2 years since he called me all sorts of awful names, etc. Anyway...I plan to just really focus on LO and lie low with FIL...hopefully he'll be on his best behavior! If not, DH and I have an agreement that we'll move to a hotel or his cousin's...but for now the plan is three nights at their place. Oh and my bday is on the 24th...so I'll be in Vegas for that too...not sure if we'll actually do anything on it though.
  • This is my first time cooking a turkey and preparing a thanksgiving meal on my own! Wish me luck Smile
