Regular detergent in a HE washer

Hi everyone,

I'm getting a new washer and dryer delivered tomorrow and I was wondering if I can still use "regular" detergent in it even though the paperwork said to use detergent for HE machines. DH and I bought a huge bottle of "regular" detergent at BJ's last week (1 day before the old washer kicked it) and I'd hate to waste it

  • nope it can cause errors b of too many suds

  • I'm not sure what kind you're getting but when we bought ours, the salesperson told us that if you use regular detergent with an HE machine it can build up and cause the sensors in it to break or not work as well.
  • You may also risking voiding any warranty by not following instructions to use HE detergent.
  • Ditto the suds thing.

Also, HE detergent is made to work with less water, so regular detergent is probably not as effective.

Can you give to someone or have someone buy it off you? The cost of the detergent is probably less than any potential repairs you'd have to do if it does mess things up.

  • We only use HE. You can give your old detergent to a family member or friend or donate to an animal shelter.

I sell appliances and we usually tell our customers that prolonged use of it isn't good for the machine, but if they have old stuff they would like to use up then the best thing to do is to dilute it.

Vinegar works best bc it also keeps the washer clean- but water will work too.

Also you will need to use less than you would typically use as well- even after dilution just to make sure the washer doesn't get ruined.
