Anyone hosting Thanksgiving?

We are (our second year doing the big meal) - but it's just us and my parents so only 4 people.

I looove the cooking & preparing of everything. I'm starting the day before with pies and cranberry sauce.  I went to the grocery store super early this morning so all my shopping for the holiday meal was done by 9:00am! It was great - no traffic, no crowds, and got an awesome parking spot.

I'm also glad we're not traveling this year (we would either go to CA or upstate NY if we did). But we're staying local and I'm thrilled.

Re: Anyone hosting Thanksgiving?

  • Yes and no. No, we're not having it at our house. My mom is having everyone at her house (with her amazing kitchen!). But with her recent health issues, HH and I volunteered to take complete responsibility for Thanksgiving Day dinner. We are working on the menu this morning, and I'm doing all the shopping with my BFF on Tues night. I will leave Wed morning with all the groceries so I can get started. HH will join me on Wed evening after he finishes his last class at 3:00. Yay for a long holiday weekend!!
  • i wish my house was big enough to host thanksgiving :(

  • We're going to the ILs. I think it's just going to be immediate family, and the plan is for everyone to make a dish. I'm going to make a dessert and since DH needs to study I might also make mashed potatoes (esp b/c they have been overlooked in the past few years and I was really sad).
  • Adam and I have decided that we're going to stay home for Thanksgiving and spend our first Thanksgiving as a married couple in our new home by ourselves.  We were supposed to go to his parents' house, but I think we're just going to do our own thing.  So yes, we're hosting, but only for ourselves.  We're going to do the whole big meal though.

  • Lately we've been having it at my parents house and then my sister and I split up cooking duties. I'm making the stuffing, green beans, sweet potato casserole and a Pumpkin Cheesecake!! (I am very excited for that cheesecake)

We have around 15 people coming, and that's just my family, and grandparents, aunts and uncles from my mom's side.

  • I have an apple pie and mac n cheese in the oven as I type this. I also made rolls and an appetizer for Thanksgiving at my moms (we celebrate it the sunday before).

Hopefully in a year or two HH and I can host our own Thanksgiving meal. We need to buy a formal dining set though lol

  • We're hosting for Matt's family, which will be 5 people (6 if his sister shows, which it sounds like she's not planning on... she left a voicemail and said she had to work but it "would be cool to try to meet up later" Huh?). This is a tactical maneuver to shift the balance of power away from MIL, who is NOT happy about it (she has called Matt about half a dozen times to scream and cuss him out because we're having the meal on Friday instead of Thursday).

I'm scared because it's my first time making a turkey, or stuffing, or mashed potatoes... Really the only thing about which I am confident is the green beans with almonds! Haha.

We're going up for my dad's clan's big extended Thanksgiving at my aunt's on Saturday, and then my mom's parents come down to my parents' house on Sunday, so we will have three Thanksgivings in three days. Oh, dear.

Hey Kelly. Would you be willing to share this recipe?

  • We will be going to my parents house and be bringing a sweet potato dish (with lots of gooey marshmallows), bread, and an appetizer or two.

I wish we could have it our house, but we need a decent table that has more then 2 chairs that aren't falling apart either.

  • We've hosted it twice at our house.  But this year my Aunt is hosting.  She's finally in a house (not an apartment, eventhough still renting) and she's very proud of it so she will be hosting.

I'm making Mac & Cheese (and I mean CHEESE! 7 kinds to be exact!), sweet potato casserole, cranberry sauce, Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie (for my Aunt - her hosting gift!) and maybe yeast rolls.  If i have Tues and Wed off I might make some pumpkin bread, too.

We're having dessert at our house with mine and Kevin's immediate families.  I'm making pumpkin crumble for sure... I don't know what else yet.

I will also be roasting a turkey breast for JUST us.  That way we have PLENTY of left over turkey!

  • No hosting for us. We'll go to my mamaw's first, then my aunt's house, then to the in-laws lol. I wish we could host and just have everyone over, but there is no way everyone would fit.

Stu, I love your plan. I wish we were doing that...my mother gets on my nerves big time and I can't drink this year...which is a major bummer since a few glasses of wine diffuses her level of irrtatingness nicely. Ergh. But I'd also feel somewhat guilty if we didn't have them over and we stayed home instead of traveling to my in-laws or my aunt's house (she lives 5 hours away and my parents do not do the trip up there ever b/c they don't like long drives like that)....

We've done Thanksgiving by ourselves before (I think before we got engaged) and it worked out really well.  It's just always so drama-tastic when we go to his parents' house.  His mom b!tches about Brody (even though she says she doesn't mind him being there).  Last time we brought him down there, she accused him of jumping onto the counter in her kitchen.  Um, Brody does not get on counters.  EVER.  He knows he's not allowed in the kitchen.  His mom gets all stressed out and then complains about Adam drinking a beer or two because "someone might see him" if she has company come over.  Dude, he's 30 years old.  I don't think anyone is going to judge him for having a beer.  We just decided that we don't need that this year... we have plenty of other stress going on and I don't feel like making the three hour drive in heavy traffic to go deal with stress.

  • This year it will be my 3 girls and My FIL this is so hard on him this year and of course us! I can't wait. I will be starting with baking pies wednesday night. I love homeade cranberry sauce but my family likes the canned jelly stuff cut in slices (always makes me giggle)  so sigh I am a bit jealous of the people making theirs.
