Are you a hugger?

I am.  When I see a friend, my greeting to them is a hug.

This obviously makes some people very uncomfortable. I am normally aware of that, so I won't hug those people.  However, this weekend, I saw an old friend, and I forgot she is NOT a hugger.  She cringed and jokingly commented, "oh geez.  We have to hug."

So, are you a hugger?

Re: Are you a hugger?

  • I am a hugger but at the same time, I don't like to be touched. There is nothing that drives me more crazy than when someone grabs my arm to make a point, or shoulder bumps me while telling a story. Luckily, no one has touched my bump yet.... I have a feeling that may change on Thanksgiving though.

    I don't know why, I guess I am semi anti-social. lol

  • I'm not overly huggy, but I will initiate a hug to someone as a greeting if I'm close with them AND I haven't seen them in quite a while. So if I'm seeing my HS best friend after many months then yes, we always hug. It's not so much because I just love getting hugs, but it seems like the appropriate thing to do. If I'm seeing a good friend who lives nearby who I just saw within the past month then no, I usually don't initiate a hug.

But there are exceptions of course :) And if someone initiates a hug with me, no matter what, I'll give them one back and I won't feel uncomfortable or anything. But there's nothing worse then going to hug someone and you can just tell they're not into it... awkward!!

  • I am a hugger, but not a kisser.... I hate it when people do like the kiss your cheek thing to me.  It seems so awkward for me, but since I do work down in Miami that is the norm with a lot of people!

  • Yes.  But, I hate cuddling.  I will be affectionate with DH, but I am not a lay all over one another person.  But, I am very huggy!
  • No, not really. But I don't mind if someone hugs me. My Step-sister & step-brother are both huggers. The first time I met them they both hugged me. I thought that was a little odd. lol

    I love my crazy child!

BAHAHa. I knew exactly where this came from when I saw the title. Hilarious.

I'm a hugger w/ some people. Good friends, and family that I'm close w/ are fine. Random friends or family, not okay. Fist bump only. LOL.

LOL.  Obviously if she wasn't a hugger, she wasn't a fist bumper either.  That was so funny.

  • Indifferent   <-- this was the look she gave you.

  • I'm the oddball. Again. I love hugging. I'm usually pretty touchy-feely when I'm having conversations too. Like, a touch on the shoulder or arm or something. I like awkward hugs. When I see my BFF I always make it longer than anyone around would be comfortable with. But that's how we roll.

I was going to post a similar thread today about whether the people here who've met me thought I was touchy-feely. Someone mentioned it to me and I was curious.

  • I thought this was going to be a post about tree hugging.  LOL!  I saw your SN and Huggers and I just assumed!

Some people I hug and some people I don't.  It just depends.

I really hope this doesn't come across as racist but I only really hug Hispanic people.  I guess it's a cultural thing so I don't even think twice when I am greeting my Hispanic friends.  However, I seldom hug my white friends.  I think because I know subconsciously they are not huggers so they either get and handshake or a pat on the back.

Well now that I think about it I might be sexist too.  Because if I do hug any of my white friends it typically is only the females.

  • I'm a hugger and a kisser.  But I don't kiss everyone, just my closest friends and family.  And I'll only hug those friends that I really like.  There are some that I'm not close to and I don't want to touch them.
  • I'm not a hug initiater with most people, but I won't turn you way if you come at me.
  • I'm a hugger if someone else initiates. I don't want to be the one that starts the hugging! Smile
  • I hug with both arms and legs, koala style.

  • If I haven't seen someone in a while, sure. And if I don't know when I'll see them again I will too. IDK. I don't mind hugs at all! I intitate and accept them at all random times, really. :)

Yes, exactly. She's in Paraguay. I have a shitton of hug time to get in.

  • Most of the time, I'm not a hugger.  My aunt & uncle started being major huggers about 10 years ago. I don't know why, but all of a sudden they just started doing it... ALOT.  At first, it was pretty awkward.  My poor H was mortified when my uncle hugged him the first few times.  He's over it now & laughs about it.  They've changed my outlook on hugging now.

  • I've become a hugger only because it's not as socially acceptable here in Tampa Bay to be a kisser.  Growing up we kissed everyone on the cheek.  Even if we just met.  If you didn't it was because you didn't like them, didn't respect them, or a handshake was more appropriate.  Yes, I'm from Miami.

Oh, and I got extremely offended at first when my FIL would only side hug.  Finally I got so fed up with it one day that I told H that his father didn't like me.  H explained that where he grew up it wasn't appropriate for a man to hug a woman from the front because her chest would be touching his.  LOL!  Boy did I have to learn!
