Review: State Park "Camper Cabins"

my 2 girlfriends and I went to jay cooke state park this weekend and stayed in a Camper Cabin for one night. the cost for the heated cabin was $60 with tax. there are camper cabins at several parks throughout the state but they book up FAST.

the building is 12x16 and had 2 sets of bunk beds. 1 twin set and 1 with a twin on the top and a full on the bottom. the mattresses are wrapped in a sort of vinyl (kind of like a plastic disposable tablecloth) which we wiped down before we put our sleeping bags down. the non-ADA cabins have 2 sets with twin on top and full on the bottom and sleep 6.

there is also a small table with 2 benches. everything is constructed from pine logs. the cabin has a sizable screened in porch that we used to store pretty much everything so we had more room inside.

the cabin is ADA accessible and had a nice firepit with cooking grate and picnic table. it has heat and electricity and a ceiling fan.

since it's winter, the showers were closed for the season but there are pit toilets (not great, not terrible) and a outdoor water pump with fresh drinking water.

we had an awesome time! we went into Scanlon for dinner but then headed back and had a campfire and listened to music and played games and laughed.

you do need to have a park pass (Daily is $5 or Seasonal is $25) in addition to the rate for the cabin.

overall HIGHLY recommended. let me know if you have any other questions.

  • We've been tempted to stay in one in the winter but the bathroom situation always freaks me out a bit.  Was it totally freezing to go to the bathroom?

  • no, not really. the cabin is so toasty that it almost feels nice to head over to the bathrooms. it's not like you're in there long. : )
