successful coupon use?

Hi, we are going to a one income family next year and I want to really use coupons.  I am very bad at keeping track of them, using them on time, remember to use them, etc.  What is your secret?  How do you organize them and use them? This includes food, clothing, bed bath and beyond type things, etc... thanks!

Re: successful coupon use?

  • I went to Michaels, and bought a $1.00 coupon organizer.  They have some really cute ones that are a dollar!  I tried using a plastic bag, but it would always break and I always had too look through the coupons all time and it was too time consuming.  I look at my coupons about every weekend, to see if they are going to expire soon.  Another way to get coupons is to get a Target credit card and use it. Plus you will save $$, you get 5% back every time you use it!    I almost always get coupons for Target when I pay with it! Then I just go to custumer service and pay it off right away so I don't have debit.  Then Target will send you coupon books in the mail "geared" towards what you buy, and they will send you emails with adds with Target coupons also.  I organize mine by: Claratin coupons, Target, grocery store coupons, etc.  Hope this helps!
  • I file the inserts by week and clip them only as I need to use them. I find it much easier than having hundreds of tiny pieces of paper to keep track of.

I love hip2save.com. Each week she posts deal scenarios and which coupons to use at the different stores.

  • I wrote a blog on it because I was having so many people ask me how I did it started! I too file mine weekly and don't clip until I need.  Saves lots of time and mess!  :)

Good luck!  It really is a good idea and can save you lots of money!!

Here is how I do it:  http://melissabufford.blogspot.com/2010/10/how-to-save-money-on-groceries.html

  • I write my grocery list on an envelope and put the coupons I plan to use that day in the envelope. I keep the others in a separate envelope. There are times though where I find a better deal on a different brand than the coupon that I have so I just save it until next time.

  • I have a 3 ring binder. In there I have the clear baseball card sheets and alphabetic dividers. I clip all my coupons and put them in the baseball card spots so that I can see what every coupon is. So when I make my list and see a sale, I flip pages to find the coupon. It's also easier for me in the store to find a coupon if there's a sale I didn't know beforehand. If you want more info, PM me.

  • ooh, love this idea for once I do clip! I always have a ton of coupons and am shuffling through them.

Plus, I once bought a package of cheapo envelopes and I never use them cause I am worried they will not make it through the Post Office they are so thin.  So that would be a perfect use for them!  Thanks Jkip!

  • I don't get the newspaper so I have to find my coupons elsewhere. What I generally do is make my grocery list then look for manufacturers coupons. I also get some coupons in the mail - especially for places like BB&B or Babies R Us. I have everything in a $1 coupon organizer from Michaels (just like the PP). I organize them by type and store (ex: Grocery store - food, grocery store - non-food, grocery store - baby, babies r us, bed, bath, and beyond). I also go on-line to my local grocery stores website and get coupons there.
