My *Help Me* List.....

Please pass along your tried-and-true recommendations on any or all of these things.  I can't seem to master any of it.

1.  Bath towels that actually absorb water.  We bought a whole set a while back that seemed nice in the store, but have never actually dried us off.  Seems like they're coated with something.  Very annoying.

2.  A lightweight, cheap floor vac that doesn't scratch floors.  Please remember the cheap part.  I'd rather not shell out a hundred bucks.

3.  A way to clean stainless appliances that isn't just a polish.  The "polish slash cleaners" I've tried all polish well but don't remove ANYTHING.  One I swear is just Goo Gone repackaged.  It smells just like it, too.

4.  A way to clean cheap vinyl mini-blinds.  Not dust.  Clean (they're gross).

5.  A way to get burnt gunk off a ceramic cooktop.  I use a Weiman's product, but it stinks.

Thanks y'all for anything you can do to help.  I've tried the search feature on here but it's never worked for me.  Am I alone in that?

Re: My *Help Me* List.....

  • No you are not alone I think the nest has the worse search ever!  I can help with one-the mini blinds.  Take them down off the wall, throw into the bathtub, squirt with some soap (I just use dish soap), turn on the shower and get them all wet, wash them down with a rag, flip and repeat, rinse them really good, let them dry in the tub, then rehang.  HTH

I can help with this one:

You need to search in google, within the nest domain.

you go to google and type

    site:thenest.com absorbent towels

That will bring back any reference on discussion board that talk about absorbent towels (18 hits, by the way)

obviously, replace "absorbent towels" with whatever the heck you want to find.

  • 1. Try adding vinegar to your wash. And don't use fabric softener.

    2. I used to have a Swiffer Vac and really liked it. It was borrowed from MIL so we returned it, but we'll probably get one of our own soon.

    3. I clean my stove, including the SS parts, with diluted vinegar. It's fine for every day cleaning. Sometimes I also use dish soap for grease splatter.

    4. I don't really know about this. I've heard people talk about soaking them in the bathtub?

    5. My cooktop came with some stuff called Ceram Brite, which I quite like. It has a lemon scent but it's not too bad, and it goes away once you rinse. If I didn't have this stuff, I'd try baking soda + dish soap, BUT be warned that this is just an idea that I haven't tried on a ceramic cooktop (so if you're going to try it, do so carefully). It just happens to be my tried-and-true scrubbing paste for most cooked on things.

Try wiping them with a vinegar soaked rag...the ones in our apt were gross but now they look so much better.  Soaking them the tub with water + vinegar is a really good idea too.

Do you use fabric softener when you wash towels (liquid or dryer sheets)? If you do, stop using it. Commercial fabric softener reduces the absorbency of fabric. If you want to use a softener, put a cup of white vinegar in during the rinse cycle. We us bath towels from Target (definitely nothing pricey) and they're very absorbent.

    2.  A lightweight, cheap floor vac that doesn't scratch floors.  Please remember the cheap part.  I'd rather not shell out a hundred bucks.

I've got nothing here. I use a microfiber broom for tiles and hardwoods.

    3.  A way to clean stainless appliances that isn't just a polish.  The "polish slash cleaners" I've tried all polish well but don't remove ANYTHING.  One I swear is just Goo Gone repackaged.  It smells just like it, too.

Zilch advice here. No stainless in my house.

    4.  A way to clean cheap vinyl mini-blinds.  Not dust.  Clean (they're gross).

Extend the blinds fully, take them down and put them in the bathtub with some warm water and dish soap since they're really gross. It's time consuming, but take a rag or sponge and run it along each slat of the blinds. When you're done, rinse them off and take them outside to dry (just lay them on the grass or on a deck/patio if you have one). One of my apartments (1st floor of an old victorian) had 30 sets of mini-blinds that weren't cleaned in at least 10 years... The gunk was epic. I cleaned them all using this method. They looked brand new when I was done.

    5.  A way to get burnt gunk off a ceramic cooktop.  I use a Weiman's product, but it stinks.

Someday I'll get a new stove... for now I'm stuck with my electric coils.

  • For bath towels, I don't use the super fluffy ones.  Only ones with a slight fluff or none at all.  Sure, they're not as cozy, but they get the job done (drying me off).  My pajamas are on cozy duty.

  • Def. son't get super fluffy ones! go for medium softness to less soft. If you need softness go for ones with a soft side and a semi rough side!
  • 1.  Bath towels that actually absorb water. I think this is likely a washing and drying issues. Do you use fabric softener or dryer sheets? They coat everything in a layer of wax which decreases the ability for things like towels to absorb water. It can actually make them repel water.

    4.  A way to clean cheap vinyl mini-blinds.  Not dust.  Clean (they're gross). I always take my mini-blinds outside and hose them down. Then I wipe with a sponge and hose them down again.
