so this new-fangled device they call the Kindle
I want the newest generation, right? The free wifi but I don't think I need the 3G. And I'm assuming one of those delightful leather covers are pretty necessary for protection and ease of use? I'm about to hit "purchase" on my Amazon cart.

ooh, the light is essential, especially if I'm going to use while breastfeeding so I can keep him sleepy in the middle of the night. Good to know.
the only problem I forsee is when I get involved with a book, I'm kind of "unreachable" otherwise. I just read, read, read. I can see this being an issue with being able to carry the K with me everywhere I go.
Do it! I got the wifi only newest generation and love it. I got this case:

And really like it. So far, I haven't felt the need for a light, but that's because I'm always reading it in well lit areas

same cases, just with the lights added.
This is the one I'm getting

A note on cases. Amazon's used to get pretty bad reviews online because the device clipped in at the center but the case didn't have any way to secure it on the outer corners. People had complained because if they accidentally opened the case with the Kindle turned toward the floor, the Kindle pulled away from the back of the case and cracked on the back where it attached in the center. I don't know if that is still an issue. I can't really tell if that case has a way to hold it closed but that is a must for me.
Cali, I bought a clip on light at B&N. It works fine. I actually like that I can add it when I need it but don't carry it daily or anything.
You can buy the M Edge case and light separately. http://www.amazon.com/M-Edge-Executive-Kindle-Display-Generation/dp/B0042AM7KU/ref=sr_1_17?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1290457710&sr=1-17
